Turning off macbook??

Hi all only owned my Macbook for a few months, but i have been shutting it down. After looking on a few links on google a lot of people say not to shut them down.
What do you guys normally do, shut it down or just close the lid???

Pretty sure it was on mac rumours! they said it puts more strain on the motherboard and hdd etc if your shutting down. Also a mac in sleep uses little or next to no battery.

I was just more curious as what to do. I have been shutting it down whenever i come off it, thing is with mine i can either be on it for 2 mins or 20 at a time so shutting down seems pointless.
