ok, so i've just got a 2.2 in computer science from Swansea Uni.

Im torn between firing up a business and getting a part time job to keep it ticking over.

or..

to get a full blown computing job.

Obviously my degree wont just enable me to get a job in industry.
I am building up a CV and a portfolio of all my experience (programs and the such that i have developed)

What do i need to do now, and i'd like some guidance of people who have walked this path before.

what kind of business was you thinking of firing up?

If your like most students then i guess you would have some debts to pay off and not much experience of the industry you want to go into, maybe its best to gain some more career and life experience and have some contacts and money behind you before considering setting up a business.

You could do a 9-5 unrelated to what you studied of course.

A computer cooling business, the plans are there and it would work. Experience in running a business is hereditory in my family.
Starting up that business is a ver viable option, but obviosuly it would need supplementing with a part time job.

I've lookd on most major channels for jobs, monster, graduate jobs etc but i just dont know where to start and most require experience.

Only case fans/PSU fans really come to mind, do you have some kind of new invention in the works, sever cooling will be covered by AC outfits.

I think you would be entering a very very saturated market unless you have some novel or unique approach to it.

well, yes, the idea is good.

Anyway. i dont want to discuss that idea. Its just one of the options.

More interested in ideas on how to get a job :)

So u have your own idea but you dont want to give us the plan by telling us i see? :p

Have a chat to someone like me (Business Manager) at your local bank.. We'll generally tell you straight if you have a chance. Running a business is not 9-5, it's 24/7/365 and then some if you don't want it to flop, especially in the first few years.

Getting a graduate job in computing with a 2:2 might be difficult. We wouldn't employ anyone with less than a 2:1 unless they'd worked with us previously (on a placement or whatever). I doubt we're the only employer to do that.

well as i keep saying, the viability of that idea is not up for discussion, thats been discussed indepth already.

I just want more information on maybe what paths other computer scientists have taken:)

Got to admit, a lot of employers might be put off by that score. However, I do know people that do well with such a score even so. Attitude and motivation are equally important. As someone else said, experience is the most imporant aspect, but a good degree helps significantly.

Unless you've got a sound business plan and you know what you're doing - I'd suggest to crack on and get some real experience.

(Edit : As a fellow 'computer scientist' I have no regrets in joining the ladder after gaining a degree - I'm always learning, and I'll hopefully always want to).

Yea, this is what im wanting to know, how to attain such experience.

I know its not a 2:1 or 1st but at the end of the day most of our class had 2:2's as the teaching in this department is so bad that everyone complained and of course we got mixed into the industrial action. which meant exams were cancelled and rescheduled with not even 24 hour notice.

Plenty of students suffer really bad environments and problems, and you shouldn't really care what most of your class got.

If you want experience, get marketing yourself. CV etc.

Most big companies have graduate schemes. I'm working for HSBC and have been for two and a half years. i have had £6k pay rises in that time and if I get the job I am applying for, that'll be 11k in 2 years 7 months! Not bad really!

On the business side of things, I have to say, I've had nearly 150 start ups and manage a portfolio of nearly 500 and let me tekll you, things my look good on paper and be 'planned perfectly' but in the real world, rarely work out that way. Just some friendly professional advice:)
