Mate at work is going on about getting a set of these. Now I've heard about Astro Mixamps. But I'm a bit confused.

Are these just as good, anything else worth considering?

I've had a set of X41 for a year now and been really impressed with them, have both my xbox and PC feed into them via an optical switch.

When I first purchased these where wasn't anything else that offered what they did, 5dolby 5.1 surround (yes I know it's simulated, but works well) on wireless, not sure if this has changed since?

Which as you put, are hideously priced.
Are there any competing heads sets at the low end of the price scale ?

nope, do you know anyone with Astros that you can try out?

I Know that along with myself, Bevy, Alrik, Bubbles and a few others on my FL have them, Killswitch and Mischiefs Dad have the X41, next time you'r in a lobby with us ask the other guys what they all think of thier headsets to get some opinions.

Even the £15 XLC's are not too bad. Maximum loudness is just about right imo (they're passively powered) but the chat can be a little quiet because theres no separate control for that, but that was fixed in the latest update.

I do have a set of X11's now and they are better. Although I don't like the volume/mic control switch unit, I tend to knock it while moving around and completely mute the sound by accident.

Just a shame they've become almost pointless in Black Ops with the nurfed sound.

HDMI cable to TV
HD AV cable connected to back of 360
Then connect the cables as required

Or you can use the Audio breakout cable that came with Elites (or buy one from eBay cheaply) as sometimes the original AV cables wont plug in if the HDMI cable is bulky.

Also your TV may have an headphone socket. You can use that too.
