TV as second monitor?

Saving for another monitor then using my current as second but at the moment I do have a 28inch hdtv, am I over thinking this or is it as simple as plugging the hdmi cable, switching to hdmi on tv and away we go?

Also, plug into gpu or current monitor? Both have hdmi slots.

Of course yes just plug in hdmi into both tv and gpu.
