TV aspect ratio?

I have a 7800GT with TV out. I just got a widescreen TV (not a new one so it's not HD) and I'm trying to get it to output the right aspect ratio. It's plugged in with S-video and I have the latest drivers. At the moment it just seems to be stretching everything. Just the ability to resize the vertical and horizontal seperately would be acceptable but I'd like to be able to use a resolution with the right ratio. At the moment I can only set it to 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768.

Select your TV as the only/primary display. Then goto Screen Resolution & Refresh Rates, under this tab in the drivers you can add a custom resoution, this can be used to get the 16:9 ratio you need. I understand though that 1028x768 is the maximum resolution on TV-Out.

What drivers are you using? Which part can't you find?
Using latest drivers. Can't find a screen called Screen Resolution & Refresh Rates in the nvidia control panel.

Hmm but that still doesn't look right. It's still getting stretched.

You need to force the aspect ratio with that otherwise its closer to 4:3, its what dvds use though and the highest res the tv will support.

I am using the old style panel and coolbits2, it is the third one up.
Ok I found it now. But it won't let me use the resolution you said. It just says its invalid.

How do I do that?

Sorry I just assumed that would be a allowable resoution. Try other ones ;)

EDIT: I have just tried 1000x756 and it was allowed however when selcting it didn't look much different from 720x576 (Im using 87.25)

Google VLC media player, you can force the video files/dvds to operate at a few ratios, 16:9 being one of them.

^^ = For video files and such at least not sure how to get your desktop working I'm afraid.

Tvs don't support that though.

In MCE I've got it set to output a 720x576 signal with a virtual resolution of 1024x576 (Anamorphic) so you're probably right...1024x576 would be the resolution you'd need to get the correct aspect ratio though, so it may not be possible on the desktop I guess.

How to set MCE to true widescreen is explained here for anyone interested.

I use vlc already. I think I'll just have to live with the desktop being the wrong ratio but at least I can get vids right.
edit-I actually need to set it 4:3 to get it right, that way the screen stretched is horizontally so it looks as if it's the correct ratio.
