Hey folks, I need some advice from the AV wizards please ;)

So I'm in the market for a TV to wall mount in my man cave, which already has a triple monitor gaming PC setup... I'll be shrinking (in a sense) down to dual monitors though when I get another 1440p monitor later in the year, so I can bin off my two old 1080p screens... Which will free up some space along the wall the TV will be on, above my PC monitors.

Ideally wanted something 42" region, but seems 49" is my minimum with the models/features I'd like. I've had my eye on the new 2020 LG model 49NANO866NA which is £1049 and looks to be released 1st May, mainly as I intend to buy a PS5 later in the year, also might try some PC gaming on it, but not too fussed about that. It will also be used to watch films and maybe stream some Plex content to it as well. I also peaked at the Nano90 due to the full array backlight, but that's another £250 and the screen size jumps to 55" which is too big for a barely 3x3m room.

Now I was almost set on the new 2020 screen, until I come across the 49SM9000PLA for £699 - which has full array backlight (but seen reviews complaining about haloing) and 4x HDMI 2.1 ports, which means support for eARC, VRR, ALLM etc. The only downside is the 2nd gen processor, not sure how much of a difference this would make to the gen 3 processor on the 2020 model? Also no HDR10+ although not sure if there's much content about that would use this?

Now am I wrong thinking the 2019 model would be a better choice and value for money (£350 cheaper) - or is the 2020 model really better in terms of the other features and newer processor it brings? Is full array really worth it, or sticking to a newer edge lit panel instead? Or is there any other TV you'd recommend for my use case?

TL;DR - best panel for next-gen console (PS5) gaming and films mainly? I think HDMI 2.1 is a must, crisp image quality, a fluid OS, good app store (catch up, Amazon, Plex)...

TIA!

@hyperseven Just done some Google-fu and YouTube-fu and you know what, that looks like a fantastic shout. But seems it will be another £400ish when released next month :o

But I love the features on it... OLED, G-Sync, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz refresh... I may have to twist the wife's arm on it, she'll kill me though :D

If you can hold out a bit longer they should come down a bit within 2-3 months, OLEDs don't hold their release prices for very long going off of previous series. As the 48CX is the first of its kind though in the smallest size for an OLED TV, it may hold its price for longer depending on supply levels.

My plan is to upgrade to a HDMI 2.1 GPU and a 48CX at the same time for a godlike shift in visual fidelity.

I like your thinking @Ayahuasca - I wonder if it will become a chunk lower in Black Friday deals? Might just have to wait for the first slight price drop if there is one late summer or something.

Likely be proper last minute as imagine the PS5 release will be out then too, which if I buy both that and the TV, the other half will hit the roof. Was trying to stagger my purchases a bit :D Hmm...

Yeah it's a waiting game and there's always uncertainty with how it will pan out, especially with the current climate.

I'm thinking we'll see the first drop to around £1200 after 3 months, £1000 black Friday and then down to around £800 in the clearance sales next year before retailers need to make space for the new series.

Hey @Sparx,

Seems like we've been through a similar journey, 55" is just a tad too big for my lounge and I want to future-proof my purchase for the PS5. I purchased my 49NANO866NA today and thought I would share the great deal I found with you! £899 with a free LG SN4 Bluetooth Sound Bar worth £199.

Something to keep in mind is that whilst the 49SM9000PLA does indeed have HDMI 2.1, it won't run 4K@120HZ so realistically it will cover 95% of PS5 usage it isn't technically future-proof. Currently the 49NANO866NA is the only non-OLED 49" set available that is future proofed for PS5.

Best,

Jack

So the LG Nano86 you said wasn’t 4K 120hz is indeed 120hz at 4k

Just ordered the LG 49NANO866NA (£579 and 5yr warranty) to go with my 6800XT. It's booked to land with me next Tuesday so I will post my thoughts when I set it up if anyone would like the info.

Mine arrived today. Not had chance to check it out yet though.
It’s for Xmas for my son to run his new NVIDIA 3700 Gaming PC and PlayStation 5.
Hopefully I’ll get a chance at the weekend to setup and test the hardware.
