I'm about to buy a U3011 moving from dual 22" (for gaming and apps). I hear TVs with higher resolution are on the way by 2013, is this true? I've heard talk of new LG IPS panels using retina displays. Then there is 2k TV.

All I can see from LG is that they're working on a 5-inch retina display (1080p). The retina display in this year's Macbook Pro is 2880x1800, and it's 15-inches in size. I can't see them bringing PPI that dense to desktop size displays any time soon, certainly not in TV sizes. A 23-inch monitor would need a nearly 4K resolution to qualify as "retina", and your computer wouldn't be able to make use of it in anything other than games, which would then run at the pace of continental drift unless we see a MASSIVE increase in GPU power in that time.

So buy away, you're at LEAST two years away from anything of the sort. By then, we will hopefully start to see OLED in the higher-but-affordable range too, which is what I'm more anxious to see.

Yeah screw that lol the new dell Uxx13 line is gloss screens and bezels ewww so U3011 it is over a TV as I haven't had a TV to watch movies on for over 8 years. When TV's catch up in resolution and price we can all get 60" monitors.
