what sort of laptop is it?
usually you'd use the small round socket on the back that looks like an s-video connector (that has more pins).
you could posibly already have the connector. It'll split to two leads, one a standard phono and an actual s-video.

Assuming you mean Laptop -> TV, depends what outputs it has. Could be VGA, S-Video or DVI. Most likely VGA I would say, which sould happily output 720p or 1366 x 768 to the Sony. Can be tricky sometimes if you're running 1440 x 900 (for example) on the laptop and you want a different res on the 2nd screen.
