TV Licence Super Thread

I'd get rid of Netflix. I don't use it much anyway. And this is basically desperation.

This would make the cost of Netflix more than double. It's not worth that to me.

It clearly shows the TV licence is going to end up as a tax. Because it's basically saying "we can't let the BBC fail".
Once people stop subbing to streamers they'll need to move it to council tax.

Amazon, Netflix etc aren’t going to let their business models get trashed with extra cost because the BBC has failed to produce anything worth paying for.

Can’t see that happening, but who knows with this looney govt.

When the sources are the Express and the Sun, using words like "could" and "face" in their headlines, the source may as well be Keith on Facebook whose source is "trust me bro".

I don't have a clue how this can be done. Maybe it can, maybe it can't. It's bizarre though.

Will have to be a lot of details of how it can be effected. Will it be an honesty thing? Will you Netflix etc need to change their systems to accept an ID? Seems hard to believe.

Well be interesting to see how it plays out.

Amazon prime video is already plagued with adverts, all this would do is make piracy even a more attractive option

open a pirate stream video is instant with no adverts

prime you have to sit through some adverts at the start and more during the video, its just pants!

The same papers that will tell you we have a Beast from the East snow storm coming next week.

Yeeeeeah nah. TV licence is already difficult to enforce, and this would make it impossible to enforce anyway.

They will be in for a big fight against companies with a lot more money than they do. But if it happens they are basically handing the final victory to pirates.

Not sure how it would fly legally either or how they can even force them to do it. Why should successful companies have to prop up a failing competitor.

This government want to give them a perminent charter, which would suck if they make it a tax because it will never change and never improve and we'll be forced to fund it forever. But Reform have said they will put a stop to all of it.

BBC channels are not available on Amazon Prime live TV streams. They don't even have BBC News 24 on there.

All bar the news should be funded by adverts. Its how they operate the BBC programs in USA, they can sell commercially because its what they do abroad. That is the only change needed

We know but the TV licence isn't just to watch BBC channels otherwise you could watch ITV, Channel 4 etc live without a licence and you can't; what those links say is that they could change the terms of a licence so that you can't legally use a streaming service without a TV licence so it would no longer be just to watch live TV broadcasts.

I doubt they would do this but if people keep cancelling because they have switched to a streaming service there won't be enough income to pay their bills.

Then like any other businesses which doesn't keep up with the times or offer products people want, they fold.

They are already cutting jobs and I doubt the government would let them fold they will turn it into some sort of tax rather than a "licence" with no way to opt out before that happens.

They have their fingers in too many pies, I don't agree with the licence fee being used to fund world services, things like bite size should be funded and managed by the DfE, why are presenters on huge salaries, why are there so many BBC channels and so on...

I haven't watched live TV at home for years and don't have a licence, but back in the day when I used iPlayer I did pay for a licence even though at the time you didn't legally need a licence to watch iPlayer. IMO you shouldn't need a licence to watch channel 4 etc because they don't recieve any of the funding but if you are using any of the BBC services then you should have to pay something.

Personally I couldn't care less for dross like Eastenders but I do miss things like the Proms which is why I'd like an iPlayer subscription model so I could dip in now and again.

They've also added paywalls to view BBC news online in the states as few months ago too. I think it's 50 bucks a year, you can view the paywall if you happen to have a VPN.
