I have a TV upstairs.

Currently have a PC connected via HDMI which is perfect.

Media streaming from other PC's in the house (cabled network).
On demand, live streaming etc.

The PC will be put to task for another purpose shortly.

Do I just build an ITX/mATX rig or is there an equally simple solution which would be cheaper?

Thanks.

Nvidia Shield TV box would fit the bill - I got mine for £150 with a controller and a remote. Install SPMC (essentially kodi customised for the Shield) and you're away. As well as playing network files I have it setup to watch/control/record TV over the network from my PC in another room that has a TV tuner card in it.

I'm currently testing out a Nvidia Shield, however struggling to see what benefit there REALLY is over say the Xbox One with Plex? (specifically referring to my setup which is a 1080p projector with 7.1 surround and disregarding any illegal streaming via Kodi).

So far the only real gain seems to be HD sound passthrough, as Plex on X1 can play everything MKV / M4V wise.

Game streaming works well but clearly isn't full quality (as advertised) as you can see the compression making the image much softer than the 1080p it's set at.

What does SPMC do that Kodi 17 nightly doesn't?

Also, what is everyone encoding blurays in nowadays? x264 or x265? HD sound or not? MKV?
