I've got a newer 4850 that has DVI, HDMI and VGA outputs, I want to connect a monitor to the DVI and VGA to have them as an extended desktop solution, but my question is this..

If I was to connect a TV to the HDMI output would I be able to have it duplicating just the main screen, or will it scroll the picture across dependant on where the mouse is, or will it before forced to extended desktop?

I suppose really I should be asking if I can even use all 3 at once?

No but I am interested in hearing the answer.

Not sure if you can use all three but my guess would be if you can that windows will allow you to have an either an extended background across all three or a duplicate image on all three. Special software might allow other options however. Don't think I have heard of a single card running three outputs before though but then my knowledge on this is pretty limited.

yeah afaik max outputs at any one time are 2, what you could do is use a dvi splitter from main output to go to primary monitor and TV, this would then display same pic on both, then use your vga to power secondary monitor, youd need good quality cables though to ensure no (minimal) signal loss

Well I've got everything I need to test it but it's a case of moving something, which I suppose isn't too much of a problem to test it, I'll have to have a ganders later on.

Also means I'll have to swap my 4850's about as my current one doesn't have the HDMI :(
It's not too much of a problem if it doesn't work, I've previously had my 2nd monitor running off a 2400Pro whilst the main was running on my 4850, so if I just need to add that back in, then so be it.

Namak, if you're still following this I will be able to provide an answer later, I've got my TV to try it out and I will be swapping graphic cards later on when I get my new HDMI cable.

At the moment I've got the 2400Pro in there for my 2nd 22" monitor and the got the TV on the DVI output to VGA for the TV until my cable comes. But I have been able to make it so I've got the two 22" in extended desktop and the TV to duplicate the main monitor, the only thing is that it outputs at the same resolution as the main monitor, which I should have expected, but later I'll see if one graphics card can power them all.

It's a shame that my 9600GT in my media centre isn't more powerful, that's got 2 DVI's, HDMI and some other monitor port.

Let us know how it goes.... fingers crossed for you.

if it does not support three outputs would you be able to use both your 2400Pro and the 4850 in the same machine? I believe that is how multi screen setups normally work, multiple cards just not crossfired. Not sure how having such different spec'd cards would affect performance though.

Ha, still haven't got round to testing the other 4850 yet, but I've got the 2400Pro and the 4850 in at the moment and it's made no affect on performance at all, it still coping completely fine with the 4850 powering the main 22" monitor and my tv through a ATI DVI-HDMI adapter, and the 2400pro is happily powering the other 22", and it looks the same as it did when it was outputting from the 4850. :)

Edit: Screw it, I'll try it now!

Edit Edit: It would seem not.

When I first restated I was greeted by

As you can imagine, I was pleased to see that it had detected them all.... But when it came to duplicating the main monitor to the TV...

Fiddlesticks! So the answer is no, that is why a dual card setup is needed.
