Hi

Ive been trying to decide whether to get a TV or projector for the last few monthys now and still havnt made up my mind  atm i have a room which is 20'x8' unfrotunatly the TV or projector is gonna have to be on the narrower side. I have a budget of around 1,000 for all the A/V stuff, probably only going to have 2.0 speakers for now and maybe add some more in later. can go over budget a little bit if needs be. But the main thing im stuck on is whether to get a projector or around a 37-42" TV. It will mainly be used for watching HD films or playing the PS3 on. Most of my standard def stuff will be fine for my smaller TV.

if you've allready got a TV that you use for general viewing, i.e. a quick 20 mins of news or somethin, or SD stuff like you said then I'd go for a PJ that you can use for films and gaming etc

The Optoma HD65 has always recieved good reviews from everyone thats bought one and can be had for around £500 i think (probably cheaper if your willing to go second hand etc)

A projector makes a huge difference for watching films :) My friends have a 720p one and it's great, completely alters the viewing experience!

If your TV or projector is on the 8' side, you wont get a decent sized screen with a projector, certainly no more than large TV. By the time the proj is right at the back your down to 7 feet, its going to be about a 50" screen size anyway.

Are you projecting onto the narrower side? It's not clear from your post. If you are projecting onto the narrow wall then you could probably get an 80" screen. If you are projecting onto the large wall then the narrowness of the room will make it difficult to get a decent size screen unless you look specifically for a short throw projector.

He wouldnt get 80" from that distance, its only about 7ft if the proj was right at the back of the wall.

so you're projecting from 7' ?

so from the front of the PJ to the screen will be about 7' ???

if so you'll get about 60" diagonal 16:9

well the chair will be back against the wall so it must be about 7' back as well.

If i go for a TV what would you guys recommend bearing in mind im probably looking at somewhere between 4-600 on a tv then the rest on speakers/ amp etc

Err no - I said he could get that size if he was projecting ON to the smaller wall which would mean he could have the projector further back - the room is 20ft long.

However, OP has come back and said he is projecting ON to the larger wall in which case its either a small picture or hunt round for specialist short throw PJ.
