After a TV purchase I'm preparing to put my front room back together. I've been offered advice on a better way of attaching things - just wanted to gauge some opinions.

So we have a nice new Sony 55XE9305 TV.

Via HDMI 3 (ARC & 4k/UHD) we go to the ARC port on my Yamaha RX-V581 receiver.

Into the receiver I have a Sky Box and a Blu-Ray Player

Before my TV upgrade, I also had my PS4 Pro attached to the receiver too.
However, with my TV I will want to be using a different picture setting. Somebody advised me to plug the PS4 Pro directly into HDMI 2 (4k/UHD) port on the TV and using ARC to get the 5.1 audio back out to the receiver.
The advantage here is that I can simply switch the PS4 Pro on, input will change and as the "Gaming" picture profile is associated with that HDMI port, it'll automatically change the TV.

Will things work as described above or will I, as somebody else suggested, possibly have issues with this setup?
The alternative is that I attach the PS4 Pro directly to the Yamaha as I always have done - all that means is an additional few seconds as I manually change the picture profile. Certainly a first world problem, but if could be avoided - all the better.

Cheers all.

I have the 9005 and the TV can only do 5.1 over ARC from the built in apps/TV, the HDMI inputs will be stereo over the ARC connection to the amp. So for my XBox OneS I did as you proposed but used an optical cable directly to the amp for the 5.1 sound.

I was not aware of that limitation. I'll have a think on the Optical cable route or just keep everything plugged into the receiver and "put up with" the few seconds it takes to change the picture profile.

Or you could buy a universal learning remote with macro function and for the console activity send the "game" display mode in a macro.
Hi @hornetstinger , I have been thinking of getting a universal remote, but wondered - do the macros work very well? Eg, does the tv and equipment have to be on first? My tv takes about 5-6 seconds from hitting the power button on the standard tv remote to turn on, if a universal remote is trying to tell it to turn on then change to a different output, would the tv still recognise what it needs to do whilst its sorting out turning itself on?

You can set delays inbetween each command. I use macros to turn on and off all items, and to set inputs. So a delays is needed. for example

"Watch BD activity" macro

TV power on
AVR power on
wait 10 seconds
TV input HDMI1
AVR input BD
HDMI switch to input 1

If you do as @pepp77 did with his XBox and use optical from your PS4 to the Yam amp and HDMI direct to the TV for picture then you can have the TV change picture mode based on source and still retail at least 5.1 DD/DTS from the console.

I have to be honest and say that Sony isn't my favourite TV or audio company at the moment. Their control interfaces are ****. The lack of direct access via discrete codes makes them a pain to drive via a system remote. If you can get a Harmony to select the picture profile as part of an action sequence then go that route. Your amp is HDCP2.2 and works with ATMOS, HDR and Wide Colour Gamut so really it should be the central switching hub. Sky are adding HDR soon to their UHD service.
