Hi,

My parents are kitting out a new living room in their house.

Dad wants a big screen for sport and films.

- Budget: £700-£1000
- Size: 46-50. No larger than 50.
- not really fussed about 3D or anything like that.
- the whole room is being kitted out in a contemporary/arty style so ideally they want a TV that is about design and looks as much as everything else.
- plasma, lcd, led... not fussed, just want what is best given the above criteria.

He asked me to investigate but I don't really know much about TVs in this price range. I realise you can get some absolutely stunning razor-thin TVs but they are not prepared to spend this much on one as other things take priority. I recently (6 months ago) bought an LGPK350 plasma for around £500 and whilst I considered that a bargain, the picture quality is not up to what my dad would expect from a larger budget. Can anyone suggest the ideal TV to meet these?

Would be really grateful,

Cheers

I just bought Samsungs new range of TVs, i have to say im very impressed. I bought the PS59D6900 - 59" Plasma for £1499 with a 5 year warrenty.

The do a PS51D6900 which is the 51" version, these are new range of TVs by Samsung, they look very nice are thin and have Apps, internet, WiFi, Smart TV etc in your price range.

Plasma is always a better picture and colours and viewing angles imo, so i would go for plasma rather than LED or LCD.

If you want to go for the LED/LCD then the codes are UE(Screensize)D8000/7000.

Hope this helps

Samsung definitely seem to be leading in terms of style. Their TVs are stunning. The PS51 is slightly out of budget but I've found the Samsung PS50C6900 PLASMA Television for around £900 which fits the bill.

I'm assuming it's the same model just an inch smaller?

Providing the picture quality is of high standard I reckon it would definitely be worth considering. My dad's last TV was Pioneer Plasma he bought a few years back which was pricey but even today it blows my LG out the water in terms of picture.

Cheers

The C in the code means its last years, all the new ones have a D and the extra inch is for the new TVs they managed to squeeze and extra inch with a slimer edge.

you said your budget was 700-1000, dont know where you are looking but i just googled it and found one for 949 and Amazon doing one at 1016.

I recommend you find the very cheapest online with a store aswell like Robert Whytes and ring John Lewis they will price match it, mine was 1899.00 on thier site, i rang them and priced matched it with the other price of 1499 and got it for that from John Lewis with a 5 year warranty.

Also once you recieve the TV should you buy a Samsung phone Samsung and they will send you free 3D glasses.

I'd be looking at the LG 50PK350 and 50PK590 :) EDIT - at the lower end of the budget, didn't realise it went to £1000. At the top end, definitely look at Panasonic, though their lower end sets look a bit industrial and I feel the LG may offer better value than a bottom end model.

Do they want a TV or a piece of furniture?

The Panasonic plasma screens are the best, a tried and tested fact.

Don't Panasonic use the same screens from the Pioneer models? As I've said the Pioneer plasma my dad has is quite old but the picture quality is absolutely stunning despite its age.

Peter, thanks for that. They don't want to buy anything dated so I'll have a look for some D Samsungs.

Cheers
