Tv vs monitor?

Im thinking about getting a monitor for gaming on, currently have ps4 and soon il have a pc built too.

i currently play on a 42' tv so wanted something on the bigger side so i wouldn't lose the immersion. 24' is too small so was considering 27' upwards. the tv is sat on the higher part of my desk so isnt at eye level either - im constantly looking up so want to change this.

just wondering how much of an impact response time has on console gaming on a monitor? im considering the BenQ BL3200PT 32" LED Monitor - 2560 x 1440 with 4ms response but obviously the native resolution on this one means the 1080 of the ps4 will be subject to interpolation? i believe its 60hz too which is fine for ps4

failing that it would be XL2720Z 27" at 1080 and 144hz, a little overkill but cant help but think if i went with this for its 1ms i would have wished i got the 32"

i only play shooters so fast response and a high performance monitor is essential.

help!

I cant really offer any advice other than I used to play on a 24" monitor with the PS3 and 360.

I didnt notice any real difference moving to the TV other than the bigger screen. Ive set my TV to 'Game' mode as there is some definite 'lag' when using the standard or cinema modes due to the extra picture processing, but this can have an impact on image quality.

For some reason I preferred FPS games on the monitor and driving games on the TV. I think a 144hz screen would be overkill due to limitations in the consoles only reaching 60fps but maybe someone can expand on that, its too techy for me :D

Led tv's nowadays have either a pc mode or game mode. A 27 " screen for example with be like using a modern led tv in pc mode. just set the ps4 to full rgb mode and then you should be good to go at 1080 p as the pc monitor operates in rgb anyhow.

sadly , pc monitors make consoles look washed out until you play with the settings, my benq did until I played with the colour balance etc.. but it'll work just fine.

a lot of people are missing this very important part from the OP

it should really be obvious that a low input lag and fast response time is important for that type of gaming.

i would go with a 27", 1080P 144hz panel, yes the console doesn't support 144hz but generally speaking the 144hz panels are better than 60hz ones, plus you always have the option of pc gaming too if need be.

in terms of size, simply sit closer to the 27" than you do the 42".

put it this way I have a 50" plasma (much bigger than your current tv) and I have switched my PS4 to a 24" monitor (much smaller than 27") now and it's roughly half the distance away the tv was.

the plasma offers better colours, better viewing angles, HUGE screen experience but tbh the monitor does very well.

the plasma also has a RRP of roughly 5-6 times what the monitors RRP is when you put that into comparison it doesn't offer 5-6 times the experience.

I would go 27" and simply sit closer, you lose out on nothing then.

Seams a waste of money to me

I also see no point in rigging consoles up to monitors. Surely they're designed with TV's as the target display medium, so TV probably the best you're gonna get. I know when I tried it by rigging my PS3 up to my 24inch Acer, I swapped it straight back as it looked much better on the TV even after tweaking.

Ooh! 6000th post!

With 1080p the PS4 looks great on my monitor (in contrast to my PS3 which looked horrible). I'm running an ASUS 144Hz 27inch monitor and haven't noticed any input lag.

i thought the PS3 looked pants on my 24" PC monitor but the PS4 looked just fine.. Its a 1080p screen and its a 1080p console for nearly all games so it seemed fine.

What's the difference between a TV and a monitor? They are both visual display units, designed slightly differently but they do the same job.

That's like saying a M3 is designed to be used on the road, therefore it will work best on the road and not on a track as it was designed to be used on a road.

They are both designed to do the same job, if anything the monitors are designed for competitive gaming in mind, tv's are designed for movies/immersion and not really designed for gaming.

A console may not take full advantage of a monitor but monitors generally speaking especially gaming ones are better than any normal tv for competitive fps, especially if the tv has high input lag, ghosting, etc.

I have a 50" GT50 and a 24" Asus VG248QE, I can't really tell the difference between them tbh so to say one is better over the other would be wrong but in theory the gaming monitor should be better for FPS. The fact is that my GT50 is one of the best tv's you can buy, so I'm not surprised it does so well up against a gaming monitor. It has very low input lag (for a tv) and motion is brilliant on it (far better than LCD tv's).

Not much differences between TV's and Monitors these days and the any thoughts of input lag and response time is silly. You won't notice the difference and even then... the facts are often wrong, most monitors show off a response time of 5 but that's been tested to black to grey and not black to white which is the true value you need to know.

I used to use a 40" HDTV between two 24" monitors and that 40" TV was the best thing ever. When I can afford it, I will sell my monitors and buy 3 40" TV's to replace my monitors.

Saying that! TV's can't beat the monitors that can do insane refresh rates but from what I see, they still too small for me.

I use a 1080p monitor as it's all sat on my desk and the OH can watch tv at the same time, picture to me looks a lot better than on my panny plasma, When I want to play on a big screen I hook it up to my optoma hd25e :)
