Hi, just after a bit of advice.

Thanks to work discount I can save over £1000 on a new Sony XE9005 directly from Sony. However it only comes with 12month warranty rather than the 5 years usually available at retailers.

Do you think the saving is worth it over the warranty? Using this set as the example, but generally for other sets too?

You could easily get an extended warranty for a few quid a month if you wanted to? Sony obviously have faith in their product to offer a five year warranty though and you can usually extend it with the manufacturer or their allotted agent without too much hassle although cheaper options are available.

A hi-fi thread questioned whether 5 year explicit guarantees ie JL. are now important since consumer rights does give 6 years
"Up to 6 years If the goods don’t last a reasonable amount of time, you may be able to get some or all of the money back but the burden of proof will lie with you to show that the goods should have lasted longer"
I think there is a lot of scope to get commonly acknowledged problems fixed even without a 'warranty'
maybe the likes of JL and Curry's are just exorcising this right on our behalf and pocketting the money.
There was a thread a few months back on many folks with exactly same board failure in an older sony model - seems a case in point
