I have just got this working and am thinking about getting another 360 to use as a media extender for the bedroom.

Do i need a HD to receive media or would a core do the job?

I'd guess that a core would do it as presumably none of the media is actually being stored on the xbox, it's just being relayed through it.

The core system will work as an Extender just fine - this functionality does not run from the hard drive.

TVersity all setup and seems to be playing ball for my files.....mostly.

However after around about 30 secs on large files (700mb) or 3 mins on smaller files (200mb) it loses audio and moments later the video playback freezes and never resumes.

Any clever ideas?

I've already had to bump the sound down to stereo just to get the videos to play at all. Also widescreen files seem out of ratio to me....
