Right, i was waiting for my DG834GT to arrive before i started looking into tweaking my new Be unlimited LLU connection. Im abit of a downloader (legal of course) and want to get the most out of download speeds whilst having good browsing speeds :)

What tweaking can i do?

I have a DG834GT running my Be Unlimited connection. Mine was a `Sky` version of the router, and I flashed the firmware with the latest `DGTeam` hacked version which allows you to permanently tweak the downstream SNR margin. Ask Be to change your connection to fastpath with a 6dB noise profile, you can then further tweak it via the DG`s web interface or DMT tool.
I have a downstream attenuation of 19.0db and have tweaked my downstream SNR margin to 2.3dB. This gives me connection speeds of 24150/1400 and download speeds of 20250kbps on www.thinkbroadband.com`s speedtest.

Wow, never realised you could do this. Going to have to get my DG834GT back from my dad and start playing. To think I was happy with 12000kbps :)

You can also use the DMT tool on the DG834N, not sure about the GT though.
Maybe you will be able to telnet into it and command line it.

You must be very close to the exchange to get those speeds! Btw I thought fastpath was set to 3db, not 6db (which basically is the standard interleaved setting)? Anyone clarify this?

When I was with Be using there router you could use to DMT tool to tweak snr

You still can but not with the new ones.

Fortunately, it's just a simple ticket to ask them to put you on a lower profile. They're quite quick as well.

I'm currently synced at: 24.5MB/1.4MB with a 3db fastpath profile.

I was syncing anywhere between 12-15MB until I did the following:
- Plugged into test socket. This boosted me up to 20MB (your results may not be nearly as good as I just had a test socket wired in a while ago as my phone jacks where nothing more than extension leads going into the basement and into some switch box or something.)
- Got put on fastpath. This jumped me up to 23MB.
- Got a 3db profile. This put me up to 23.9MB and then after a day or two, it settled a bit higher at 24.5MB and has stayed there ever since.

It's only set to 3db if you ask for it to be. Otherwise, they keep you on their standard 6db profile.

So to clarify:

1) Phone up and ask to be put on a 3db fastpath profile
2) Tweak downstream SNR margin on router running DGTeam firmware? (Is this the SNR Percentage on the Advanced ADSL Settings on the DG834GT running DGTeam Firmware?, what should this be set to?)

Just to clarify. Fastpath and the dB level/target SNR are two different parts of your profile.

So you need fastpath AND ALSO a 3 or 6 dB profile applied.

OK, and these are both done by phoning support? What were the tweaks on the router that can be done which are mentioned towards the beginning of the thread?

Yeah, you get these sorted by phoning suppor t (or raising a ticket online - slower but easier).

If you're using the Netgear with the DGTeam firmware there's a section called 'advanced ADSL settings' that'll allow you to tweak stuff. I'd only really play with the SNR level though, unless you know what you're doing. Lower SNR = more speed and possibly less stability and higher SNR = less speed and more stability. Extreme values are generally not going to do your connection any favours and the SNR level of 2 talked about earlier in the thread is the absolute limit you want to look at.

TBH I'd raise a ticket online as the phone support takes an age to get through to. Plus you'll get a few days to see how stable your connection is in general - no point in getting all this done if you're re-synching every few minutes through instability.

My downstream noise margin is currently around 6.5db so my router says, do i lower this to 6 or just get them to lower it to 3db straight off? I dont want my line becoming unstable that i cant use it.

Here are line stats (If i reboot router, it will sync at 12200 then drop down to about 10500, for some reason).

Connection Speed........10464 kbps 1317 kbps
Line Attenuation....... 23.0 db 13.1 db
Noise Margin....... 6.5 db 7.0 db

6.5/6 are the same. The profiles go something like: 3.5, 6/6.5, 11.

You must have quite a noisy line as with that attenuation you should be getting better speeds. Have you got any extensions on the line (they can cause interference)? Have you tried plugging the router into the master/test socket? Trying either of these may significantly improve your connection speed and stability.

My router is plugged into an extension socket not the master socket. I will try plugging it into the master socket tonight and will see if there is much difference. I'll do this first. if i find its better on the master socket i will do it that way, then get them to enable fastpath and lower me to a 3db profile.

Sounds like the best plan.

I'd have hoped you could get more in the 14-15mbit range, or perhaps higher.

I'm currently with O2 on a 3dB profile (using the O2 box), is there a sure-fire method for getting fast path enabled? The O2 rep I spoke to said they don't support it.
