I watch Twitch quite a bit and was thinking of creating a channel to stream myself playing various games. I work full time, and usually play until early morning after 5:00pm everyday and mostly all of the weekend. I thought it would be a good idea to try make a little bit of extra cash on the side via subs/follows etc...

Has anybody got a streaming channel? And suggestions/tips before I go ahead with the idea?

In this day and age, is gaming almost becoming a form of self employment? Many Twitch streamers have become successful by the looks of it.

I'm still agog that some viewers are throwing around hundreds of $ to people they watch who are then spending it all on new PCs, consoles, phones, etc. It's like digital prostitution.

I suppose it is haha with the PS4 getting Share Play very soon, I can imagine streamers to earn a lot more income. Playing games for a living is the life.

I wouldn't bother if the idea is to make money from it as its very unlikely that it'll happen.

Do it because its fun to interact with viewers and because you enjoy it.

I used to stream a good while back on PC playing CSS etc... I did enjoy it, but hardly had the time to carry it on due to being in uni which took up most of my time. Wouldn't mind getting back into it, the money would just be a plus, I think the idea of playing to an interacting audience would be fun.

I think you need around 150-250 recurring viewers every time you stream to earn a subscription button. I know someone who got a sub button from just over 100 viewers per stream.

You should post a schedule in the info section and stick to it so the same people keep coming back.

Again I follow a streamer who got 800 recurring viewers. He played 3 minutes of adverts every hour and this gave him enough money to quit his job and do it for a living (streaming 8 hours a day). Probably not making nearly as much as he would with a job but it's enough to survive and you can grow from there.

Make sure you have good audio and video quality. Audio is probably more important. And a webcam, with a green screen.

Thanks, some good pointers there. Just found this on the Twitch website which also helped.

Gonna give it a good read and understand a bit more. Should be quite easy to set up.

Just been thinking, for example, the streamers who stream for a living as there job, would they pay tax? And would they have to tell the JCP what there full time job is? Would it be classed as self employed?

Yes they have to pay tax.
