Two cables or one

So.......

980 card, 8 and 6 pin connection.
Two cables from PSU, both with two connectors.

Do I need to use both cables or can I use one cable.

At the moment I use two cables, works fine but would be nice to use one cable and have less cables on show. If its possible.

I have a Fractal Design Newton R3 1000W 80 Plus Platinum PSU.

Seems such a n00b question.......:p

I had no end of hassle with my two GTX580's when I'd inadvertently crossed my 12V rails, one card continually throttled down and the other ran its fans @100%

This was with both power feeds connected on each card albeit with rails crossed as such.

I'd be surprised if the card was happy with one out of two connectors hooked up, surely two are there for a reason?

OP - your GPU is a single rail design so the power for each of your cables comes from the same, single place, so it'll make no difference to your PSU if your GPU is powered from two connectors on the same cable, or two on two different cables. The only issue would be if the manufacturer cheapened out on the actual cabling and the cable running up to the connectors can't handle the power required, but this tends to be more of an issue on the no-name £15 for "600W" PSUs that are found in the bargain bins than anything with a recognisable brand name on it.
