Two factor autentication - potential problem with temporary phone number.

Hello people. I set up a new ipad and iphone today for someone, both with the same and new apple ID i.e linked together. The problem is the phone had a temporary phone number which is going to be lost on Monday. I am uncertain whether the 2 factor authenticaion was turned on or not with the temp phone number. When the phone number changes, what will happen? Will they get locked out of their devices if the 2fa was turned on? If its not turned on will there be any problems as well?

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure I can get hold of him this weekend which makes matters worse. I find it hard to believe that apple would allow such equipment to me rendered useless over a problem that is probably quite common. Would they be able to ulock the devices if taken to the apple store?
