Two Graphics cards gone up in smoke

I had a 980ti for about a year and whilst playing Ark PC shut down with acrid smoke, long story short could see damage on 980ti and it had also taken out top pcie slot, so rma'd it.
In the 4 weeks whilst waiting for rma I put a 560ti in 2nd pcie slot and it worked fine.
I have been running the new 980ti for just over 1 month now and that too has just stopped working, no smoke this time, just stopped outputting a video display.
My 560ti and internal graphics are working fine so 2nd 980ti gone wrong and now rma'd
At the time of the first rma OCuk advised me as 2nd pcie slot is working fine not to worry about it and just use 2nd slot.

So should I be worried it might be the motherboard that is taking out card now, just unlucky, any advice appreciated.

BTW OCUK customer service is unbelievably good in my dealings with them

Yeah i certainly wouldnt be putting any more expensive gpus in there until you find out whats killing them. When you returned the GPU did they suggest what might have caused it to go up in smoke? They might have a better idea of whats been damaged on the card and what might be causing it. Assuming they do get sent back to EVGA for testing and not just thrown in a bin :)

All I was told is yes graphics card is gone choose another.
System as in my sig, is that power supply not good then?
I don't want to but if its the best option for the new card when it arrives I could afford to upgrade power supply motherboard etc, thing is I am happy with speed when its running, but ofc don't wanna risk a third card going bang.

No warranty on motherboard, bought when first came out.

The first few weeks are when you have the highest chance of failure with electronics. From the sound of it you have just got unlucky and the two faults aren't related.

I just went back over the reviews for my power supply and it seems ok, not top end maybe but it scored fairly well and got a recommended from people that know far more than me about them.
Very much undecided on replacing mobo as I would probably go for a 6600k etc, so £400 - £500 spend is a lot if I don't strictly need to but would curse myself if the problem happens again.

Its a hard situation, a similar thing happened to me and i just used it as an excuse to upgrade, it could be your PSU, mobo, or maybe just faulty gpus.

The problem is the first card may have had a faulty part that failed and in the process damaged your mobo/psu so it would be tricky putting anything back in there now.

Like you say you can either risk killing another £400 gpu or spend more than that upgrading, a quality PSU is never a bad investment so you could just replace that and buy a used z77 mobo, theyve always been really cheap when ive checked in the past, especially if ya go for a simple one like a gigabyte z77x-DH3 which were very popular and good value back on Ivybridge so theres probably loads of them kicking around.

Update on where I am now
I almost pulled the trigger on a 6700k upgrade but got talked out of it by my brother

In the end unbelievably I found a new 1155 motherboard for sale which I jumped on
Also I have bought an EVGA supernova p2 850w power supply, maybe a little overkill but will now have a good foundation for whatever upgrades I do in the future.

BTW thx BluD for the idea and the motherboard I got was the exact one you said :)
