Two hard drives, two different OS's, will I be able to access one via the other?

Let me try and make that thread title a little clearer. I'm going to be installing Win7 on my new HD this weekend.

On my old HD I have Vista Ultimate which I'll probably remove and just use for storage.

When I boot to Win7, will I be able to access my old HD via My Computer and drag all my personal stuff (about 400 gigs) to the new HD?

I don't have an external hard drive and I'll be buggered if I'm going to back up all that stuff onto dozens of dvd's. And I know I could just go with the upgrade option and stick 7 on my old hd, keeping my content in the process but I want 7 on the new HD.

Did that make sense to you? :p

you should be able to, yeah :)

install win 7. plug the other drive in (might need to make sure the w7 drive is first in the boot menu). once loaded win 7 will install the second drive and voila

Yep, it should work fine, the drive will be listed as D: or what ever inside my computer and you will see everything in it as you would if you were running your vista install.

If you don't have any need to copy the files over you could just point your new documents, music folder etc to their location on the old drive that way if you ever wanted to format you're new drive there isn't all the trouble of backing it up.

Brilliant, I just logged on to ask this exact same question and luckily found this post before i created a new one.

Sorry to hijack your post md99 but I have a small question on top of yours.

I also currently use Windows Vista Ultimate and am awaiting a new hard-drive delivery; which i will install my copy of windows 7 Professional on. My question is this:

Will I be able to dual boot Vista and Windows 7 when the operating systems are on 2 different hard drives? If so, are there any precautionary measure I should take when installing Windows 7? i.e. Should I install windows 7 with my old hard drives still connected, or disconnected? etc.

Thanks a lot!

Yeh just make sure you disable the old drive(via bios or unplug cable) because if you don't Win7 will install the Os on your new drive and boot manager on the old one.

Edit: Not answer to post above.
