I have a friends pc, it has two users both with Itunes, as far as I can see they have NO purchased songs, but have ripped a good 50 albums between them.

I don’t use itunes and want to format the pc, rebuild and have it all working.

My plan….

Backup the user area data, with my music and itunes folder x 2
Format the pc
Rebuild
Replace the data in the correct areas
Install itunes and hope for the best…

Any advice ?

slap them for using itunes, give them EAC :o

what use is eac for managing/playing music that has already been ripped? :p

and crazy fool, i don't know much about itunes but assuming the music isn't ripped with drm/copy protection, then that should work fine. probably best wait for an itunes user to confirm though.... :)

IIRC, its ripped with no DRM in aac format. Firstly, you need to back up the songs (if they are all ripped using itunes, they will be in My Documents/My Music/iTunes Music <- backup that folder.)
2.export the library (open itunes, file, export library)
3.Back up music and library for both users.
4. After Format, install itunes
5. copy the music back to original locations (My Documents/My Music/iTunes Music)
6. Import the library (itunes, file, import)

That should work although i've never done it myself.

EDIT: Easier method below

Run the 'consolidate library' command from within iTunes on each account, then backup the whole iTunes folder within 'My Music' and everything will be fine. This includes the library files so that play counts and ratings as well as smart playlists will go back exactly as they were.

if it's only 50 albums, then just get them to redo them in high quality vbr mp3 in EAC

i doubt anyone who's already ripped their music is likely to do that? in secure mode eac takes ages and even with only 50cds that's a long time..... :p

/off topic.... :p

burst mode works fine if the cd's are heavily scratched :)

i've a few cds that are unreadable using secure mode so i'll give burst mode a try. been a few years since i've used eac. i always thought secure mode was the way... :o

edit: woohoo. just copied one of my unplayable cds in burst mode. now to check if the mp3s are good.

guys - these peeps are not geeks, i doubt they care what format it is in :D - they just wanna load itunes and press play :)

sorry for the mini-hijack but i could see your question had already been sorted.... :p

@bledd. , i tried your eac settings and even though the cd did rip, there are still glitches in the songs. :( i might have to try and find it online somewhere.... :D

weird, only ever had a problem with 1 cd with my settings, put it onto secure mode for that one disc, the rest have been perfect

this is just one ******* up cd. on secure mode it's speed was "0.1x" and i left it for 2 hours and it was getting nowhere. i've actually binned the cd now. :p
