Two new rigs, some questions.

I'm building two new rigs one E6300 and one E6600.

The E6300 will be left at stock as it will be in a case 10cm high and I can't afford a 3rd watercooling loop and I don't think the case will look good with a wavey rectangle cut in the top so I can have a Tuniq Tower sticking out. :p

However the E6600 will be watercooled and I'm planning on using the Gigabyte GA 965P-DS4 to overclock it.

The E6300 as you've probably guessed is going to be a media center and the E6600 is going to be my new flagship rig.

The issue is the lack of SMPness for XP/MCE.

I suspect I will set the E6600 up as dualboot though when I'm using it it will be in windows.

The E6300 will need to be in windows all the time with Media Center running so it will record programs so I guess I just have to run two clients until the the windows SMP client hits beta :(

One other question.

Should I consider getting a X19** series for the E6600 seeing as it will need a graphics card anyway. If so which card is better larger memory or faster memory and clock.

And Is it better to run SMP or CPU with GPU and sacrifice 2nd core?

He means SMP or (CPU with GPU).

Them's some nice rigs. Powerful media center. Traditionally people suggest the P5WDH for E6600s as the 975 chipset is prefered. Your choice. If you need graphics anyway can't go wrong with an X1900 or X1950. I wouldn't suggest getting an 8800 at this time. I'd get the 1950, 512MB if possible but 1900 512 is fine.

You can't wait for 4MB goodness in the 6650 in a few months?

The E6x50s are due Q3... so a little longer than a few months. They will also be overpriced and largely pointless so don't worry about getting one. The only advantage is the probably price drop of the current C2Ds

6600 is already 4MB cache, I think 6650 just brings FSB1333?

6320 and 6420 are what I'm waiting for, like 6300/6400 but with 4MB.

Why would they bother? 6320 and 6420 would just be slightly slower E6600s. Five minutes in the BIOS and hey presto an E6600.

If they are still significantly cheaper then great, but I suspect they wont be. Look at the E6300 and E6400 now, there is next to no difference other than a few hundred MHz. £30 quid difference too.. might as well stop selling one or the other.

Besides if linux spreads to much it'll be curtains for windows... :o

Yeah a mate has a 3000+ Winchester and its so incredibly slow running Media Center. Why the P5WDH? whats better about the 975? It's just I thought I saw reports of the DS4 hitting 500 fsb easily? The E6600 machine aint gonna be cheap anyway so I'm sure I can add a 1950 512MB as well.

And the 6650 will offer me nothing except a higher FSB if I'm not mistaken?

Lol Q3 is a little too long to wait think of all the months folding time I'd lose on both rigs :p
 
Generally the 975 chipset favours E6600 and upward. However unless you are pushing an overclock to the extreme I doubt you would notice much difference.

People are getting crazy clocks on 965 chipsets so basically there is no need to be concerned :D

If I were you I'd definitely at least take a look at it. It's definitely an alternative and it's free and open-source with a highly active and helpful fanbase. It would let you run the SMP client while also performing its TiVo-like activities through a dandy GUI. :)

Cool thanks BTI I had a quick google on it before I went to bed and I have to say it does look lovely and shiny.

I read through it all and was thinking this is all ok and I've just relised that I wont be able to hook my Xbox360 up it.

Looks like I'm back to MCE 2005 and two client until they get the damn windows version released. oh well. :)

Guess I'll just be adding about 1.5k ppd extra with the two new rigs seeing as the OCed E6600 will be running SMP.
 
I hope I get my E6600 up and running before you do!

You're over 30K behind me but that wont last long. Actually, even with my E6600 I doubt I can compete with TWO full time C2Ds :(

Why is everyone rich all of a sudden? I had to beg and plead to get the borgs I needed for my current output, now you lot seem to be buying C2Ds in bulk and pulling dual Xeons out the woodwork!

I should be getting a new job on monday. :D Ergo I will be able to build myself a new machine.

The Media Center wont be mine so the cost of that may get split. Thats really just to tidy up underneath the TV a bit. Means I can get rid of the freeview box and dvd player and eventually the VHS once I've converted our VHS to mpeg.

The E6600 may not be fulltime as when I'm not home I'm not supposed to leave any of my PC's on however watercooling is incredibly quiet thus I may get away with it without anyone noticing :D

Got my apex just waiting for a conroe. Good investment that was. Should last a good few systems. Storm waterblock, so as long as socket 775 doesn't dissapear any time soon :)
