Two psus, one pc

Hi guys

I have an old 500W psu and 1 gpu on my current setup. I want to upgrade to 2 gpus as well as some other stuff.

My case does support dual psus and I think instead of getting a new 800 watt psu and throwing away the 500. I will try getting a cheap 300w and jerry rig it to the 500w. My intuition tells me that to achieve this, one only needs to connect the green pin (and only the green pin) on the 300w psu to the green pin on the 500w psu somehow. Anyone try this before?

What brands the old psu, how old?

Personally if it was me id get rid and purchase a good quality super flower/evga.

Is superflower decent? I saw it at the store for much cheaper than other power supplies of similar power and efficiency

Even so, it might be just me but 2 lower power psus usually go for cheaper than 1 high power psu, especially if ur aiming in the 800 900 1000w range.

The word "cheap" when referring to a psu does not fill me with confidence. Psu's should not be skimped on. What make and models are these two psu's? What spec is the pc? My first instinct is to tell you to do it properly and not risk your system by using a pair of cheap psu's. Just buy a decent single psu which will last you for several years.

My current one is an owltech. It hasnt caught fire yet so i guess it is good.

I havent bought a second one yet, but id probably go with a 400w antec or something if i were to merge the two psus together somehow.

Never heard of Owltech and a search throws up very little about them either. Do yourself a favour and buy a single decent psu.

To echo pastymuncher, there isn't a lot of info available on owltech. Get a single decent PSU and save yourself the hassle of trying to jury-rig a system. Seasonic, Superflower and EVGA are all good choices.

I ran the limited google results through a translator from Japanese to English just to try and navigate the website. I may have found your unit. Is it a plain silver-looking thing?

If it is, it's a budget 500W model made by FSP with 430Wish on the 12V rails, each one rated at 18A. If it isn't this unit, then it's still likely to be made by FSP as none of the Seasonic units on that website are 500W, they're either 550W or 520W.

I looked it up. Owltechs are actually seasonic power supplies, (or at least uses its parts). Its exclusive to Japan.

I've decided to go with a single PSU. More room for the radiator.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have no idea but there is a cable sold for combining psus.

you can probably find out how it works from googling it
