Two Questions about GPU Cooling

I have a couple of questions about upgrading the cooling on my PowerColor HD4890.

Currently the cooling is okay but nothing sparkling - currently sat at 56 degC in windows, but in this profile the GPU is only running at 500MHz rather than 850MHz. Fan is at 44%.

After playing a simple game like Tomb Raider Anniversary, it upto 70 degC and quite noisy.

I also have the sides of the case at the moment because I have only just finished building so I expect the temps to increase a bit when the sides go on.

1 - What cooler would you recommend. Looking at the offerings here I have

Akasa Vortex - I assume this will only be a slight improvement on stock
Akasa Freedom Force
Alpenföhn Heidi
Zalman VF1000 (out of stock at the moment)
Zalman VF2000 (out of stock at the moment)

I can't really spot anything that would differentiates one from the other. The 'out of stock' isn't much of an issue as I'm not in a mad hurry.

2 - Removing RamSinks.

All of these come with RamSinks. I already have RamSinks on my card but they were cheap so I',m guessing these would be better.

But is there a clever and safe way to remove the old ones. They are stuck on with thermal double-sided sticky. Without any better advive I would guess trying to gently slide a thin blade (scalpel) between the sink and the chip - but is there a better way?

Many thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Nigel

70c is practically nothing for a GPU, they can hit up to 90c just fine on stock cooling.

I understand that, but my biigest niggle is the noise.

Also it is hitting 70 on pretty basic graphics.

Nigel

i have a 4870, and its at 830mhz? memory at.. 1000hz? and like you said it idles about 50-60, and when running benchmarking software it goes all the way up to 84c with its stock cooler. but whilst in games, its mainly around 70 - 75c so isnt as loud. my PC is on the floor? might be why i dont notice it as much.

and the loudest thing about a gpu will always be then fan, which are usualy made to a budget. so if you did upgrade the stock cooler, chances are it would be quieter. as hopefully, they didnt cheap out on the fan :P
