Two switches together

Is it okay to run two switches in a system? I can't see a reason why it wouldn't be. But I'm not sure if the Gigabit LAN performance would take any sort of hit.

The reason I ask is that I'm installing some home cinema gear for a client. There's also some bespoke cabinet work that has been built but not yet installed. The original brief included provision for a small switch (8 port gigabit would have been sufficient). Now he's got it in to his head to wire up the bedrooms too, so that means 6 more connections. There isn't room in the cabinet to accommodate a full size 19" unmanaged switch. However, I do have three feed lines available from the router located in another part of the house, so I can fit another 8 port switch in the cabinet. That won't involve major reworking of the cabinet, which would be mucho $$$ not to mention a delay in the project.

So, are there any penalties for running two switches?

Thanks in advance.

Yes it is fine and you can have as many switches as you like (well, within some limits anyway :p). It won't effect the speed, but whatever you are connecting up will be limited by the speed of the slowest switch.

Something like the HP 1410-16G would give you 16 ports to play with, and they're fairly small.

Using multiple switches could cause bottlenecks as there'll only a be single connection between them. Whether you'd ever actually experience any problems is a different matter.
