my friend just rebuilt his computer and when it loads he has the choice of windows xp and windows xp :p - in the dos screen at the statup, this is a bit strange and adds 30 seconds to the bootup unless you make a choice...

only seems to be one copy installed though

anyone know away around this?

right click on my computer
select properties
select the advanced tab
select the startup and recover "settings" button

the settings to disable it are in there. alternatively you can edit the MSDOS.SYS file but it can be messy and takes more effort :D

I think you mean boot.ini. Clicking Edit in the Startup & Recovery Control Panel opens boot.ini in notepad. Just delete the redundant OS.

Did he keep a partition from his previous build, as i did this, then once i formated my old partion the option to boot into the other windows went :)

tell him to rebuild again, or his hd will be full of crap

backup.
turn on pc, insert bootable xpsp2 disc
press a key to boot from cd
remove all partitions on disc, create 1x new ntfs partition
voila!

well he def formated and deleted the partition, so not quite sure what has happened really...

so which one of these suggestions will sort this?

The first two - they're both the same, really.

You need to remove the offending extra entry from boot.ini, you get to that from the Startup & Recovery Control Panel.

Goto Run then type msconfig, then click on the Boot.ini tab and click the Check all boot paths button.

Or do that - fairly idiot proof method, that one. Probably safest. Forgot about msconfig! :)
