Ive had the TX850w corsair PSU for around 4-5 years now and I decided to upgrade my computer recently.

Asus x99-s motherboard
corsair vengeance ddr4 2666Mhz 4GB x4
i7 5820K
2xR9 390x Asus strix oc
2XSSD
Gaming keyboard and mouse
custom cpu watercooling loop

My question is whether or not the TX850 will be sufficient to power this system. The online calculator I used suggested an 858W PSU but I have seen other people recommend at least 1000W.

my initial reaction is not enough. PSU do degrade a bit over time and use and I think If you are playing a game that has good xfire support and actually stresses both cards it's probably going to be to much. If it was a good high quality brand new 850 watt PSU i think that's still pushing your luck a little bit but could probably just about get away with it.

If you're running a custom loop your going to want to overclock the cpu as well i assume? the fact those 390's are the highest clocked right out the box wont help either.

Just did some reading on the PSU, not the most efficient at high 850w loads. actually falls to just under bronze certification in some of the tests i saw, A brand new PSU was pulling 1030 watts from the wall to power 850W of components. If yours is as old as you say who knows how much power it's going to be pulling? That PSU is going to be cooking for sure, then add a xfire setup in the case and that's a lot of heat, would need very good case flow, because as PSU's get hotter their efficiency will decrease.

Maybe it will hold up but you would really be asking a lot of it and really imo it would be a matter of how long it will hold up rather than if it will hold up.I don't believe in cheaping out on PSU's, one of the mos important parts of a PC and when you have £1000+ of parts why risk them for the sake of £120? seen some gold evga 1000w PSU's going for that much recently.

You have 840w on a single 12v rail but the psu is getting on a bit now so may not be capable of that much anymore. While it should manage it, thing's may start to go wrong when you factor in overclocking so if it was me I would be going for a gold or higher rated 1000w unit.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £411.59
(includes shipping: £11.70)

Thanks that helped a lot. I decided on a 1300w G2 EVGA psu. I know overkill but it only cost £20 more so thought may as well future proof. 3rd r9 390x? ;)
