Type R and VTEC owners

I actually quite like the red FN2, but only with mugen bits on as stock is just horrible. The silver FN2 wheels are overkill for this car, way to big IMO.

Unfortunately, I can't buy the EP3 as my insurance would most likely eat me alive... Apparently Tesco takes into account bike NCB, if that's true than maybe. But that's in 2 years time, so will probably go for something else. I'm not a big fan of newer hondas, well those 2005+.

What happened to the guy that was suppose to post a YT of his supercharged FN? Do you want to see me cry?

Is that directed at me? haha :D

Both cars are fully Mugen and the silver has the original 19" Rage alloys on it. Didn't bother changing them as they quite suit the car :)

Does anyone have an issues with being seen in their S2k's?

I've nearly been driven in to twice now in the last month or so. I'll be in the first lane on a dual carriageway or on the motorway, and the car in the middle lane will just move right across into my lane without seeing me:confused:

So, a visit to TGM on Saturday. The intention was to have the following fitted:

Öhlins Road & Track Coilovers.
Spoon monoblock calipers.
H&R 10mm hubcentric spacers.
RAYS CE28N wheels.
AD08R tyres.
Eibach anti roll bar.

Got there for 9am and dropped the car off. Des and I went into Basingstoke to pass some time. 5 minutes after arriving we were bored so we had some breakfast and returned to TGM. How on earth do people go out and spend the day shopping? By the time we got back, the coilovers had all but been fitted and Tom was in the middle of putting the AD08R's I'd had delivered a few weeks ago on to the wheels.

I hadn’t seen them before so I was keen to get a look. They didn’t disappoint, lovely wheel with a great colour. Very happy with my decision. I had a look around in the car park and there were two cars with other wheels I’d considered, the RAYS RE030 and Work Emotion, after seeing them in the flesh I’m glad I went for the CE28N’s! No wonder they are so popular.

In order for the Spoon calipers to fit with the offset I’d chosen, I need to run the spacers. I’d read that they will clear, but when Tom mounted the wheel there’s about a 1mm gap between the caliper and the wheel. Ordinarily I’d run a wider spacer but this then brings issues with the wheels rubbing the arches! I may look into a 330mm kit and see if they require less clearance and maybe change them.

In terms of rubbing, there’s a slight bit when I hit a hard bump or brake like an idiot, and after looking at the arches, the tyres are touching one of the little plastic clips rather than the liner itself. I’ll keep an eye on it nonetheless!

Unfortunately time ran out to fit the roll bars, so I’ll be back in a few weeks time for them. On to the drive, well, it’s like a new car. The coilovers are fantastic; they soak up bumps with no noises at all, they are comfortable and body roll is reduced a fair amount. Tom described them as the Rolls Royce of the damper world. They really are class, 100% the best out of the brands I’ve tried. Combined with the tyres, the car handles like a dream now. It’s very planted, pointy, lots of communication from the chassis. Went over to South Wales yesterday and over some of the back roads my confidence in the car was much greater than any time before, it really does handle well now. I haven't really had chance to try the brakes properly but they don't feel too much different to the OEM calipers on the road.

Now onto some pics.

JDM boxes everywhere!

Although the wheel isn't 100% straight here, you can see how it pokes out a little bit.

Nooooooooooooooo :(

The inevitable finally happened - rot has caught up with my Prelude. It's been quietly eating away at the rear sills and very bottom of the arches underneath the skirt on both sides. MOT picked it up today. Only had one quote so far but looking like £400-500 to get it repaired properly. I was really hoping to get another year out of the car before it threw any big bills, not sure whether to go ahead with the repairs or not really.

Needs a couple of hundred spent on rear calipers and discs really, and there's rust breaking through at the bottom of the A pillar too so I really don't think it'll last more than another year or two.

I guess if you've got no desire to keep spending on it to keep it going over the next few years it may well be time just to ditch it then. Especially if it's worth next to nothing already.

What would you want to get? Could be easy to jump out of it and into something else jap, old but more popular (so more expensive) and just as rusty - see mr2 turbo, S14(a) etc

S2000 looks brilliant, Think I need to invest in one of those :D

So I test drove the new Type R today and I have to say I am very impressed, considering the fact I own some really high specced FN2's at the moment. Compared to a standard FN2, it is leagues apart and I mean that. The cornering ability and the amount of grip this car has to offer is just sublime, there is a tiny bit of turbo lag but as soon as you go past 2.5k rpm, there's a huge amount of power that holds all the way upto the rev limiter. It has defiantly won me over, Wouldn't want one right now but I'll consider one in 12 months time. The build quality is massively improved and the interior looks hell of a lot better in person than the pics I've seen online, Same can be said about the car. It's not as quick as either of my cars but for what it is, I'm very impressed. Well done Honda! :)

Yeah it's a fair point, most of what I'm interested in within my paltry budget for a replacement would be just as old and rusty... going to see if I can find someone who'll just bodge it up for the MOT and try and get another year out of it. Wish I had the funds to look after the old heap properly because I do think they're brilliant cars.

S.S has the nicest fn2's. I'm tempted to test drive the new one but I'll probably end up killing it.

the new civic just looks like a mugen FN2, like I have been saying since the concept was released.

my S2000 is due a service, so I am going to try and get that to coincide with a test drive

I drove it this afternoon, mixed feelings on it.

It's a bit more refined than the FN2 which can only be a good thing, plus without the R button activated I'd say it's also significantly more compliant. I didn't find myself being jerked around over our terrible roads anythign like as much as in my own car.

It's got a fair old bit of power and there isn't too much lag, pretty relentless delivery at motorway speed but it all feels set up to be driven on high speed roads or fast flowing track conditions and therefore ends up a little bit detached feeling to me. Pulls from low down and to be honest doesn't feel like it retains much of the vtec character, though it's definitely there somewhere.

Feels competent to chuck around rather than particularly involving (despite the impressive times), but I only drove it on A roads and Motorways so might be jumping the gun a bit. Would like to get it on some twistier tarmac to see how it is.

I found it didn't suffer anything like the FN2 does for front end grip in the damp, even with the exta power, the steering and pedal weights were pretty well judged too. Didn't have loads of steering feel but reasonable for a new car. Gear throw nice and short, the box not feeling massively different to the fn2 apparent from having obviously different ratios.

Interior vs price is where I think it really struggles. It looks ok, but just ok and I think the dash material and the steering wheel coverings in particular stand out as appearing/feeling very cheap considering this is a near £35k car. The handbrake is on the left hand drive side of its console too, which is a bit odd considering it's supposedly a japanese car (I can almost get this in a car where the main market is Europe) Don't think the slab of a screen looks very integrated either - fine for what is now a relatively old car and design in the FN2, but i'd expect something a bit neater on a car that's in theory just been released.

Couple of pics, taken in the rain on my phone and my own car is filthy but there you go:

They really need to drop the R branding.

Refined? Isn't that what the Type S was for?
