Type R and VTEC owners

Is that your old S2K sneaking in? What's the status of that? I'd never run a hard top though. Roof always down. It's the law.

I really must own one. Miss my MX5 but love my Honda.

As a side note, my FK2 (1.8 Type-S not the new Type-R) is on 127k now and refuses to fail an MOT or break. Not the most involving to drive but I'm super impressed with it, has a really hard life and has been driven into in the past. Plus it's ginger, not many in that colour.

Old one has sat on drive at parents since June when it gave up at 180k miles. Not done anything with it but need to at least get some of the decent bits off (TODA manifold, poly bushed arms and diff).

Want to see what happened to engine too. It spun a Bearing but want to see what else happened.

Hardtop came with it and it's grew on my. Plus my never ending kitchen project means I have no where to store it anyway.

The hardtop I had on mine made most of winter much more bearable, plus in March it was such a great feeling to get it off and enjoy it.

I believe my old S2k has been written off now :(

Hard top on s2k ?? Only spoon type one :D

I ******* LOVE s2k with Spoon roof . Since what i dont like about s2k is that its soft top HaHa but with this coupe roof its liiking epic for my liking :)

On other note my 21 year old DC2 passed mot no problems last week. Had oil change while at it millers nanodrive 5w40 ofc :)

Just cause I like to know stuff.

For those who have owned a DC5, how much to run, IE maintenance/Servicing and fuel?

Reading around, its rather cheap for a high performance car and easily be used as a daily.

Same as an EP3, although insurance is more.

25-35 mpg, peanuts to service and run and they hardly ever go wrong. When they do it's usually a cheap fix.

I don't worry about insurance, my 3.0i Z4 is £500 for the year to insure and I'm 24.

Ah that's good to know, I'd love to have a DC5 in the future.

I'd get a DC5 quote, you may be shocked. They are ridiculously expensive to insure. Make sure it's the DC5 you see results for and not the DC2, it doesn't show on comparison sites so you tend to have to go direct to the brokers.

You probably want to put some extra aside for undercar protection?
One of you actual import owners may know better than me so feel free to correct me here but I don't think the JDM cars had any protection at all underneath.

I'd ring up for quotes too tbh, I've only ever saw one DC2/DC5 that actually came up as a DC5 and not an Accord or Civic Type R thus giving incorrect cover and premiums!

No they don't but they are generally undersealed by whichever company imports them. As said though, some have been in the country a long time (10 years for mine) so it's definitely worth getting it checked. As with most Honda's, the rear arches are prone to rust as well.

DC5 running costs, as already mentioned, are similar to Civics. Over the lifetime of mine I probably averaged about 32mpg - and I can't recall a any single drive without being in VTEC for a fair part of it. So long as the oil and filter are changed regularly then they don't ever really have any issues. 2nd gear can be a problem with some older / harder driven examples, but a gearbox refresh with new synchros will cure any problems and make the car feel like new again. Some people have had the timing chain and tensioner replaced, but they are lifetime items so it isn't that necessary unless there is clear evidence that the tensioner isn't doing its job.

As for undersealing - mine had some undersealing present when I bought it, however for peace of mind I got it up on ramps and done the whole lot again. For the little outlay and a little bit of time and patience it's worth doing.

Insurance-wise, you'd be best to speak to one of the many insurance brokers that specialise in imports. I used Brentacre, however Greenlight and Sky Insurance I believe were also common companies other owners used!

My connects2 fitting kit arrived today for my FN2, I've got a cheapish android head unit being delivered from amazon tomorrow. Hopefully going to do the install at the weekend. Trim pullers and screwdrivers at the ready...

Good luck :)
Don't forget the white clips on the standard OEM head unit / fascia at the bottom need to come off and go on the new connects2 fascia!

Thanks for the heads up, I've watched a few videos on removing the factory unit, and it doesn't look too bad. But I can't seem to find any that show the installing of new units. I presume I need to take the hazard button off the original facia as well.

Well, certainly surprised.

I've done silly quotes for myself as a laugh, Aston martins, Ferrari's, WRX STI's all in the region of 500-600.

For a Coupe with less power than my Z4....£1040 for the year :o wow.....Still want one though :/

Yeah I've looked at DC5s many times, I guess insurance companies don't like the whole imported thing, even if it shares a lot of parts with the EP3. It's a shame they were never released here in the first place because I'm pretty sure I'd have owned one by now, as both the cars themselves and insurance would probably be much cheaper.

So those who remember my last EP3, the crazy lad who bought it off me has turned it into the most expensive EP3 of 2017 I think, he's had it resprayed haha. Think he's fitting some ridiculous wheels, spoilers and stuff though however, nut job.

Fair play to him, the lad is only 20 but got a good job and has the money to burn, I'd have loved to have had it painted.

If you haven't then try the following companies:
Pace Ward
Keith Michaels
Greenlight
Adrian Flux
Sky Insurance
Brenacre
Sainsbury's (ensure you ring them as the DC5 doesn't show up on their site)

You may get better quotes.
