Right im a noob on the this networking stuff guys :(

My dad's recently upgraded are orange boardband package to the max with free VoIP calls which sound great but isn't.

First orange sent there "Orange Livebox" which you have to use for the free VoIP calls but the problem is we have a Netgear DG834Gv2 already set up and working nice :)
Now i've got the livebox working but the wireless signal isn't very good and there's only two etherent ports on the livebox.

I spend all day yesterday playing around with both and atm i have the livebox as a gateway/modem i believe and the netgear as the main router which the livebox is feeding the internet to the netgear and the both are connected by a ethernet cable.

Which at first seem to work great but when using the wireless from down stairs its very slow

So im thinking could it be the ethernet cable which is connecting the twogether be slowing the speed down.

What the best type of cable to use ?
Cat 5 , Cat5e, Cat6
UTP or STP or cross over ?

I'd imagine that the ports on both routers are only 10/100Mb ports, and as such even CAT5 is fine for the application.

Your problem is most likely due to routing issues and/or NAT processing. Which router are your wireless clients now connecting to, the old Netgear?

How have you got the Orange Livebox set up? Can it have a DMZ?

I turned the wireless off on the livebox to use the wireless on the netgear +
and i turned DHCP off on the netgear.

yes i did see DMZ in livebox's setting.

yes i guess so there both routers

From searching online i did find this from a fourm:

"Its working , Been up for a good few hours now and several reboots . For anyone interested this is how its set up .

Livebox on its default 192.168.1.1

Netgear on 192.168.1.2

PC1 on 192.168.1.3

PC2 on 192.168.1.4

PC3 on 192.168.1.5

All 3 pcs are set on manual IP's with a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 and the dns also on 192.168.1.1 .

Livebox has a dmz set to 192.168.1.2 .

No special config done to the netgear a dg834 .

This is all working peachy as far as I can tell . Just need Orange to activate talk service now lol "

You cant do what i think you are trying to, if you want to take advantage of the VoiP then you HAVE to use the Orange Livebox as your router. If you want to use your DG834G then you cant use the calls. If you want to use a second router it will have to be a cable router that receives the WAN from an Ethernet port.

true but if the phone line goes into the livebox then change the settings and that, and turn off the wireless and connect the netgear to the livebox and the netgear should be able to be the act as the main router ?

Well what you are doing is wrong. If you want everything to use the netgear then the default gateway for the PC's needs to be 192.168.1.2, you should also have the netgear and PC's on a different subnet to the Livebox.

you need to have a cable netgear to set it up properly as the livebox needs to be on the wan side of the netgear, not the internal network.

interwebs --> livebox (192.168.0.1) ---> (WAN: 192.168.0.2) netgear (LAN: 192.168.1.1) ---> network

something like that is what is needed, which I don't think you can do with 2 adsl routers.

in conclusion: you can't do what you want to do with your current kit.

The Netgear will need a WAN IP address to use the functions otherwise it will just act as a standard switch and wireless will be painfully slow because things are not correctly router.

I think this is what your doing?

you cant really do it, properly anyway.

If you do want a set up like this then you need to replace the DG834 with a cable router which will get its IP from an Ethernet port. Something like a WRT54G will be great for this, install custom firmware and your set :)

Trouble with running 2 routers is that you fall in to the double nat'ing hole which I had at one point, I run an am300 in bridge mode so its completely invisible and basically ends up being nothing more than a modem and my wrt54g does everything else.

Just use the livebox and a decent access point

you could use the netgear just as a switch, this is how I have my home network configured, my BT wireless router (only two ethernet ports) connects to a netgear wireless router via ethernet, my netgear is just used as a switch. You could set up like this:

Orange box:
connects to phone socket on WAN port (ADSL)
wireless configured for your home network
can use your VoIP calls
connects via ethernet to netgear router
DHCP turned on
local area network: 192.168.1.*** subnet 255.255.255.0
router /gateway addres 192.168.1.1

Netgear Router:
connects to Orange box via ethernet
disable DHCP
local area network: 192.168.2.*** subnet 255.255.255.0
router/gateway address: 192.168.2.1

now either configure computers with static IP's in the 192.168.1.*** range, or just use DHCP. The netgear should just be treated as a switch.

Ok guys atm im thinking ditching the negear and just use the livebox and im thinking of buying: Wireless access point + 8 port switch
That should work ok with the livebox shouldn't it ?

Also what the best cable Cat5e or Cat6 guys ?

Can you not just use the livebox as another device attatched to the netgear?

I say this becasue I use a Vonage VOIP box (which includes router etc.) attatched to my home network as another device with all those features turned off. Vonage say you cant do it like that, mine has been running for a month or so now and I say it works fine.

Might be worth trying it before splashing out more cash?
