so when I create a static page, I assume I will have to use html and css to create text boxes in different positions and insert tables and images in different positions?
NOOOOOOOOO tables are a no-no!
CSS is used to place items these days, not tables really. Tables are only good for things that need a table of data, say a calendar or something similiar. You should use css to make sure that items play nice with each other...
ok basically I want to create 10 boxes 2 across with 5 going down, enough for a short 3-4 lines and an image. With a fairly small gap in between them.
where would I start? What book do people recommend for beginners? Looking on amazon now for a html and css guide but unsure about authors and who is good...
Download a template and then change the crap out of it. Learning 101.
As for the cost of design, it seems a lot when you don't know so much about what goes in to it. But you pay for what you get. Professional sites are professional design, business and relationship.
Also... I imagine most of the pay is to cover stress/therapy from clients wanting iFrames
