Im getting 25%-35% when performing a file copy from IDE to SATA I. Seems a little high to me... What should the average be? Cant find this info anywhere on the net. I have a Athlon 64 3700+

about the same on my sempy to be honest, notice it was higher when i had "cool n quiet" enabled for some reason.. infact the system lagged a lot with it enabled when copying files, could be this? anyway, tbh dosent sound like high cpu usage.. unless im suffering from it too :P

Ah, I think it might be cool n quiet. Could possible explain some the wild fluctuations I am seeing as well. Will test this tomorrow. Good to know other people getting this throughput. Unless me and you allllec are both suffering the same fault, if it is a fault. I was surprised how little information there was on google about average cpu usage on file copying. You should have seen all the variations I googled for as well.

yeah, just to illustrate i copyed a 700mb movie file from my IDE drive to my SATA and this is with cool and quiet DISABLED, its more like 100% with it enabled :/

and this is what the cpu usage was.. (first 100% spike was just opening up task manager) (also i closed all my applications so nothing else was interfering)

sorry that will take a wee while to download, hosted of my server - damn ntl and only 400kbps up

Nice one Allllec. Same as my machine. I wonder if this is one area where a dual core would be of a benefit. Could use one core for the file transfer and the other core for the OS. I wonder what % cpu load would be with dual core?

Could anyone else give an estimate on what their CPU load is on large file transfers from IDE to SATA?

Copying files from my IDE DVD-Rom, to my SATA HDD comes out at 0-1% Cpu utilisation. Are you sure all your drives are running in DMA mode. If any of them are using PIO then higher cpu load would be quite likely.
