I've RMA'd my GTX470 directly to Zotac last week and expecting it to take 6+ weeks like any other RMA I decided to order a new card.

I ordered a MSI 6970 Twin FrozR a few days ago but today I got an email from Zotac saying that they had tested my card and were sending a replacement ".....We do not have stock of the GTX470 therefore we would like to give you a new boxed GTX480 SKU: ZT-40101 and will ship today." :rolleyes:

Looking at the reviews around the GTX480 seems to be about equal to the 6970 so any ideas on which I should keep? :confused:
 
Yup I'd take the 480. If you feel like splashing out find an aftermarket cooler. The Zalman VF3000 is exceptional.
 
I have heard that the 480's do exceptionally well under water, so I might give that a go.

/looks in box under desk n finds 2 completely unused water loops :eek: (2x PA120.2's, 2x laing ddc's & many other goodies)

From experience with a 470 and a few mates who bought the ridiculously cheap 480s on here (when they were under £200 about a year ago) it is possible to use them "as is". However, the trade off is that if you want it quiet it will overheat, and if you want it cool it will be noisy.

They do operate within acceptable temps if you rev the fan up, though.

But water? that's where they're made to thrive tbh. The 6970 is a poor overclocker any way, the 480? if you're into that sort of thing it's a bloody great overclocker.

Love my water cooling, but just haven't used it in a few years (check clocks in sig) but I think I might have to dust the cobwebs off it and get it up n running again!
 
if you are even considering watercooling ditch the msi since there are no waterblocks for it shame really since its a sweet card ill be ditching mine soon for a reference model just so in the future ill be able to watercool hindsight is a great thing it seems.
 
I have my 480 water cooled, clocked at 851MHz on the core and 1001MHz on the memory, runs well in BF3 and temps under water have never been higher than about 54c.
 
I would also send the 6970 back - a 480 is plenty enough to get you over until Kepler, and it wont depreciate as fast and by so much as 6970.

nice mine is 810/1025 on mem

but on air - in games- worst case - 92C - but is totally stable with no artefacts even at those temps

in Furmark again gets to near 100C but no artefacts
