Typing faster

I want to start typing faster. It's pretty simple, but meh.
I'm left handed (not sure if that has any relevance whatsoever) and I feel that I personally do not type as fast as I could be able to, or as fast as I used to be able to.
I have some flaws, such as the fact that I use my right hand index finger to press the space bar 95% of the time, therefore my thumbs are used for nothing.
Also, when I even attempt to type fast, I make a lot of errors in some words.
Since I use the right index finger I obviously find the typical position of where the fingers should be laid uncomfortable.
Any tips? I'm getting a mechanical keyboard soon so that should hopefully improve the typing speed.
Thanks.

Play this: Z-Type

Also before you start trying to learn to type fast, make sure you are typing correctly, for years due to PC gaming is was typing perfectly on my left hand but only using one finger on my right hand. Took me months and qite a lot of will power to sort out that little quirk.

That is the worst advice you could give anyone ever. Yes they are good key layouts but when 99.9% of the world uses QWERTY you end up working yourself into a corner.

Thanks, I played it just then, I shall play it whenever I have some spare time.
I also just noticed I don't use many of the fingers on my right hand either. It just seemed natural for me, and it's quite weird trying to use more since I'm left handed, and generally only play games where the left hand is required (WASD).

Tried Type Racer and got 70 wpm with 94% accuracy. I think I could get around 80 if I made less mistakes :(
I guess practice makes perfect really, and hopefully if I practice with TypeRacer and that Z Type one I should get better. I think when I'm just casually typing I tend to slow right down, like now for instance.

Thought Id give this a quick bump as Im still trying to improve my typing speed.
Just took a test on 10fastfingers and got this result;

I really cant seem to be able to type with my fingers in the home position on they keyboard, it's really hard :(
I think hopefully in a couple of years I can push this to 100 WPM, thatd be insane!

Learn how to touch type, this is the "proper" method to type with uses all of your fingers on their own area of the keyboard to maximise efficiency.

This picture shows how the keyboard is split up (Each colour is a different finger) http://www.filebuzz.com/software_screenshot/full/touch_typing_technology_course-54708.gif

I used this website to start out (I didn't go through all of the lessons, I think I did the first two then felt confident enough to exclusively touch type from then on, was really slow at first, then you just get used to it) : http://www.typeonline.co.uk/lesson1.html

You mentioned just that keeping fingers on the home keys was hard....well, unfortunately this is exactly the advice I'm giving haha :P Give it a try :)
Thanks for the advice. It's weird because I'm only using my index fingers to type, literally, and am managing 84 WPM. I feel like by doing this I'm losing so much potential.

Tried some of the websites you guys have linked, I just can't do it using all the fingers man, so frustrating :@
