Tyre advice - change one or pair?

I've had a part worn tyre put on for now. Its a Continental Contisport 3 (225/45/17Y same as Falken 452) for £50. Its clearly stamped as part worn.

There were others at £45 and £50 with varying tread depth and I chose it myself.

The other front tyre has about 1k of mileage left so will replace that with same soon too.

Before getting the wheel alignment done I would check for play in the front wheels, play left to right usually indicates a problem with your track rod or the end, if there is play vertically then it can be you bearing that has gone, these can cause your tyres to wear unevenly and not point getting wheel alignment done until you check these.

I had a part worn fitted around christmas last year as money was tight. I got it changed when i could afford it, but it's still languishing in the garage just in case i need something to get me out of the mire again. But mine cost £25 not £50!!

Changing one or a pair: This for me would depend on how old the other tyre is and how worn it is e.g f you have done 1000 miles, kerb it, and wreck the sidewall i'd just change the one tyre.

I took it back to Kwik-Fit and after the retest they tried charging me £25 for it. They made excuses to say that the Capital One offer didn't allow a free retest and that the computer wasn't allowing it to uncharged.

I pointed out the VOSA certificate itself said the retest time if the repairs were done by third party allowed till end of next working day which excludes Saturday/Sunday. As I had the original test on Friday, this gave me till end of Monday. After a couple more taps on 'the computer says no' they said its fine.

First and last time I use Kwik-Fit, well until I get another £25 MOT voucher. :D
