I dread getting new tyres fitted. Will my alloys come out chewed up, will they even balance them properly, will I have a balancing weight fly off again. Stress. Luckily I don't need new boots yet but something that has been bugging me has just popped into my head.

Balancing weights- Is there any reason why the clip on type weights need to be used over the stick on ones? On my 306's alloys when I got them they only had clip on weights on the rear, when I got new tyres fitted to the front they decided to hammer on some nice chunks of lead and when it came to new tyre time again I noticed this had left scratches in the wheels which I assume then becomes a place for corrosion to take hold?

Just wanted to know before the time comes if its a reasonable / possible request that they only use the stick on type?

I always ask for stick on weights, not only do they look better but they don't damage your wheels, i usually speak to the guy who's doing the work and sound him out see if he's alright and usually say could you take extra care matey since the wheels are worth a fair amount each etc etc.

Every place should have the stick on weights as there a lot of wheels now with no lip to put the hammer on ones on. I recently had mine done (4) and they appear to have come out unscathed. The biggest PITA was getting all the previous sticky foam/crap off from the old stick on weights which looked pretty unsightly.

What tyres are you looking at?

Not sure yet. If I keep an eye on the tyre wear and remember to swap the fronts and backs at the right time so that they both need replacing at the same time then I'll do a swap to 225/40's (I think, the swap that most people do anyway) and go for some Eagle F1's

...if on the other hand I forget or misjudge it I'll leave the tyres as they are and stick on a pair of standard size Falkens up front and change all 4 next time round :)

Thanks for the info. I'll make sure I ask for stick ons :)

As a side thought what is the opinion on etyres? Are they able to do as good a job with their mobile equipment? Any horror stories?

It looks like they come out at about £6 per tyre more than the Blackcircles fully fitted price. To be honest after factoring at least half a day's holiday to get them fitted this seems like a good deal.

All I can say about etyres is that I've used them twice.
I had 4 tyres fitted over two months - needed all 4 done, but was a little short of cash, so had 2 done and then 2 the next month.

On both occasions everything went extremely well.
I ordered them on the Monday morning.
They came out on the Wednesday to my place of work, did the fitting while I carried on working, I then did a walk around, signed their paperwork and job done.
So for me it has been twice used, twice very happy - I'm sure there will be people who have had problems as nowhere is perfect.

I always worry about my wheels getting damaged when fitting new tyres, i always ask the tyre fitter to take care, to be honest i'm usually stood with him when he doesn them anyway incase of damage etc.

Liverpool Lad, you going to let us know how the Asymmetrics perform?

Phil

This might be a really stupid question, if so I apologise. But e-tyres would balance the tyre as well right? Just I never heard of them before and would be good for when mine need changing soon.

thank-you :)

Yeah they do the whole thing, just as a 'normal' garage would do. I'll certainly consider them. Depends on if I have an excess of holiday that I have to waste.
