Tyre Insurance / Gunk

Unfortunately, last week I had to scrap a rear tyre with less then 1000 miles on it due to a nasty nail. After I recovered from the shock to the wallet I was thinking about potentially getting tyre insurance. Does anyone have this for their car? Any particular good/bad experiences?

Another thing I've had recommended to me is some magic gunk that seals relatively minor punctures as they happen. The URL is:

http://www.ultrasealuk.biz/home1.htm

Something like that would have saved the tyre with my latest puncture, as it was the tyre deflating and the rim cutting into it that caused the damage, rather than the object itself. My biggest worry with this is how would you know if you had something in the tyre? I have such fat-ass tyres that there's no way I can check them without ramps or removing the wheel.

You can get a little gadget that tells you if the tyres are not at the correct pressures, it involves having a band+sender fitted to the inside of the wheels.
You then inflate to the correct pressure drive for a short while then press the calibrate button, from now on if the tyres deflate by any signifacant amount it will let you know.
Not expensive far as I know just have a looka round.

I already have that built into the car. It went off with my latest puncture, but the tyre went down so quickly that by the time I stopped the rim had done some pretty serious damage to the inside of the tyre.

Get run flat tyres?

Run flats ruin the ride and aren't repairable, which is exactly what I don't want.

I want something that will stop a simple nail in the middle of the tyre costing me 200quid :)

Some Tyre fitters offer insurance against punctures for a few extra quid (Hi Q & ATS are some) although I believe they will only repair the tyre not replace it.

If the nail was in the tread then its perfectly repairable, in fact your old tyre would be sold on after being repaired. It'd probably retail for about 20 to 30 pounds if it was an expensive size/brand or 10 if a normal size

I know someone who does this as his business out of a back lane and he drives a ferrari to work

Nah, believe me mate, it was totally screwed. I've never known a tire go down that quick from a screw.. I was there when they guy popped it off the rim, there was a good 2-3 heaped handfuls of shredded rubber inside, and the cord was visible in several places.

When I went to get my tracking done, the chap was raving about Tyreseal:

I have runflats on my Mini and they are awful. I will definately be considering the Tyreseal stuff when I replace them.

Matt

Similar to the stuff above, just not 100% sure about it with a 'performance car' (I hate that phrase).. it sounds a bit too good to be true :)

I carry a can of foam in my car instead of a spare tyre, the only time I could have used it was no good because the hole in the tyre was massive.

Thats a gonner  , you got the flat at high speed?

The gunk is ok for limping a few miles, but it's a definate new tyre then, if it's a slow puncture i'd just pump it up and leave it, got a chance of being repaired then.

No, doing about 35, like I said I've never known a tyre go down so quickly.. when the warning came on I was round the corner literaly from where i was going.. by the time i pulled up it was completely pancake flat
