The missus has had a fight with a kerb in her car and evidently lost.

I wouldn't normally question this and just get it gone but it has not long been replaced and probably only seen 500 miles or so.

Is this still safe? it mostly looks like rim protector damage (Can't really blame it for failing to do its job in this scenario :D ) but figured I'd go for a second opinion.

Would you leave and monitor or just get it off and get some new ones on there?

It's a bit hard to tell, but I had something similar on the front nearside of my 350Z, quite a deep chunk out of the rim protector part of the tyre but not down to the mesh. I asked at my local garage and again at a tyre place and both said it was completely fine, and that was after saying I'd prefer to buy a new tyre if it was borderline.

I think that's just about OK. Having saiud that I personally wouldn't chance it and I'd replace it. It's not worth the risk.

UPDATE: We use a local place with a mobile mechanic who lives not far from us, he stopped by on his way home and said its fine, just keep an eye on it in case a bulge forms and then get if replaced it needed. They told us the date they fitted them too, only been on since 24th September so glad they've said to not worry.

I had one like that on a car years ago and it was fine. But those were Eagle F1s and had a rim protector.

I think they may be eagles, or Pilot Sport 4s can't actually remember what I went with in the end.

It was slow speed ? I guess so otherwise you'd need fast reactions not to have cut it elsewhere, but,
if it was a 1mph pinch during parking (the car wasn't auto parking?) then probably ok if there's no bulge on sidewall (as said)

Providing there's no bulge or cords showing, its fine.
I've been a MOT tester for nearly 20 years and seen many many tyres like that, and it's not a fail, and most testers wouldnt even advise it.

I'd definitely be looking to replace the wife if that's how she drives.

I've driven tyres with worse cuts before for a few thousand miles with no problem. Although most of that is just pootling along rather than some hardcore stuff

Mine has always passed the MOT with one of those on rear tyre -Was an advisory though. I think I might have a few more after hitting every pothole in Shropshire this year.
