Tyre size different to registration expectations...

I'm just trying to source some new tyres for my wife's polo. It's currently fitted with 175 70R14 84T tyres, which I was just going to replace with the same sized quality tyre. However I've noticed that whenever I search tyre options by registration every website states I should have 195 55R15. The tyres were last replaced by a previous owner.

I'm aware there's some room to get different size tyres for the same wheel. Is it likely the previous owner has brought a different size for value or some other reason? Is there any advantage in going back to the original 15" tyre size?

Cheers!

You need the right size tyre for the wheel, and you've presumably got 14" wheels, hence why you've got 14" tyres on it. You can't put a 15" tyre in a 14" wheel.

Mrs' old polo had alloys and I'm sure they were 185/55/15. Current polo I think has 175/65/14 tyres on steel wheels. If you look in the manual it provides you with a list of tyre sizes.

Both 9n polos.

There won't be much in it. The thinner tyre (175) will be slightly more fuel efficient. The wider tyre (195) will have slightly more grip.

The overall diameter is very nearly the same for both (23.5") so no need to calibrate speed/odometer.

(Handy calculator.)

I imagine new it maybe had the 15" alloys from the factory but at some point someone has swapped them out for a set of 14" steel wheels?

Just match the size you currently have.
