Now I'm usually quite careful with regards tyres.
I appreciate that it's only those 4 things that keep you on the road - I'll never buy unbranded etc.

My car was in today to have a "Christmas Tree" of lights sorted out.
I was rather surprised when I got into work to find a phone call telling me I had two illegal tyres and two borderlines.
I rushed over to the garage and indeed - this was no BS, I need 4 new tyres!

So where as I thought I was taking my car in for some under warranty work and the only cost would be £10 for the insurance excess waiver for the loan vehicle.
Instead we're up to £460 on tyres alone!
Today is not a good day to be me :(

Not really, whenever I have had to buy 4 I always negotiated a good discount, and recently when enquiring about tyres got told I would be given a good rate if I got all 4 done (Kwik Fit even quoted buy 2 get 2 free, and that wasn't their crap budget tyre either).

I had the same experience a week back, though i knew the tyres were questionable. Ordered through blackcircles for £210 fitted (Toyo Proxes) what got me the most was that the recommended fitting garage took 2.5hrs to fit the tyres! Would rather have paid a bit more and got them done through my local fitting place in half the time or less.

Then to top it all off, a service and MOT turned into Service, MOT, EGR Valve replacement, cam belt replacement and 4 wheel alignment (our lass decided to ramp it up over the biggest kerb i have ever seen in my life!!) to the tune of £700. No plasma telly for Kef this month! :(

Cheek of it was the main dealer decided to add on a charge of £65 for putting it on a diagnostic machine that told them to replace the EGR valve (i had a feeling it was a bit iffy as warning light had been coming on/off for a few weeks), they got told where to shove that as it hadn't been agreed before hand!

How did you not notice two illegal tyres on your car?

I honestly don't understand it.
I'm usually really careful about tyres.
So unless the dealership have taken my 4 tyres off and replaced them with the ones I went to see a little while ago on my car, I must have missed them.

I am totally kicking myself.

I could have aborted getting the car looked at - I know I can get 225/45/Z 17" for around £100 a corner.
I phoned around a couple of places and nobody was offering good prices on good tyres, or they didn't have the ones I wanted in stock.
Found a place offering:

Bridgestone RE050A at £130 per corner fitted, eventually managed to talk them down to £115 per corner, same as etyres.co.uk were selling for.
