Well after 20,000 miles it looks like the front tyres are down to the wear indicators (strangely enough the rears look like I have a couple of months wear in them).

I can either replace them like for like with the Pirelli Eufori at 263 quid (and another 260 odd for the rears in a couple of months -- or I could replace all four with Falken FK452s at 361 quid all in.

I'm thinking with winter coming up I'd rather have four great tread tyres rather than the rears marginal. However :

- the standard tyres are 205/50 17 on the front and 225/45 17 on the rear (I have the standard msport 17s)

Q: Am I OK replacing all four with the same size tyres : 225/45 17 ?

I know I'm also completely amazed. Never seen this before as all cars I've ever owned wear the driven wheels out at roughly twice the rate of the non drive wheels.

All I can think of is the Pirelli's are so pisch there's a load of understeer.

Probably that horrible ship anchor of an engine weighing the front end down :o

Might be worth looking at the alignment as there must be a reason why the fronts have worn out so quickly.

Keep the standard sizes, don't put rear size tyres on the front.

Go for a good premium tyre, not a Falken but its a good chance to move away from nasty run flats.

lol - at 75 miles a day commute + personal mileage of around 10k a year, sadly an oil burner was really my only option until I'm a dirty contractor again!!!

Just had another look. I remembered the difference worse than it is. Front needs doing this week, rears are probably 0.5 mm different.

What about the tyre sizes then, people. I could do with ordering them tonight if poss.

Order the same sizes that are on there at the moment, but avoid run flats.

Can't give any advice on a tyre brand or type though.

OK - ordered the std sizes in Uniroyal Rainsport 2s. The Falkens seemed to be a bit hit and miss according to forum reviews.

Looking forward to feeling the road again with non RFT! This was my first car with run flats, can't believe how bad they are when I'm in an enthusiastic mood.

Cheers for the advice.

Surely on a RWD car like the 1 series if your fronts have worn out quicker than your backs something doesn't quite add up?

Yes, it's the giant lump of cast iron sat at the front of the car. Oddly, BMW never advertise the 1 series as having "near perfect 50:50 weight distribution". That's because it doesn't

Very odd. After changing all 4 tyres on my 1er twice now, the fronts always wear at 1/2 the rate of the rears (and probably less).

Could be the wife driving it for 6 months. Loads of short, slow journeys through town negotiating the school run slalom course.

When she used the fwd car we have exclusively the fronts lasted 9k miles, the rears 51k!!! She's not a fan of turn steering wheel whilst driving - more of a stick it on full lock and then pull away.

It'll be driven properly now anyway, she's not using it anymore!
