Hi everyone,

My Peugeot 206 is coming up to 5 years old and the tread depth on 3 of the tyres is getting quite low - I have around 1.75mm on the two fronts and one rear tyre and 5mm on the other rear tyre (replaced by my parents when a whole slab of rubber came off).

I have an MoT booked for 20th July for the vehicle and I am wary that they may not last long enough to be of a legal limit for the test. I reckon 200-300 miles and they'll probably be at the legal limit. The legal limit isn't really ideal though, so I want to replace them before this.

I have Pirelli P3000 tyres all round at the moment, but I have no idea what to go for in replacement though, unless I go for the same tyres.

They're 175/65/14 and I don't think I want to go for 'budget' tyres.

Thanks,

David

Many thanks for your replies.

I think £55-£65 a corner seems reasonable to spend on the tyres. Bit concerned with the tread pattern - it is going to be different on the rear because I'll have a Pirelli P3000 with 5mm in one corner and the rest by someone else (unless I get the same thing).

The car has done 71,000 miles whilst it was in my parents and my ownership - I bought the car from my parents in January this year with 64k on the clock.

But no, three of the tyres haven't been changed and I know that tyres only have a limited lifespan before the rubber etc. starts to go bad.

Thanks,

David

Cheers for your reply,

I am tempted to get a P3000 for the rear, only just because the other one has 5mm tread on it.

Get some better tyres for the front - are the P3000 tyres considered a mid-range or budget tyre?

Thanks,

David

Hi everyone,

Those Contintental contact 5s look good but the reviews do they say they can be a little noisy. But £214 isn't bad at all.

I believe the 5mm tyre is 2-3 years old.

Thanks,

David

Many thanks for your replies,

Unfortunately, it's a space saver I have. Horrible thing rattles so much.

If I was able to, I would remove the space saver wheel & cage and keep a full size spare in the boot instead.

I was considering how to sell the 5mm wheel and was thinking of getting a steel from a scrappie and using that for the new tyre..or mucking around with getting the 5mm put on the different rim and keeping all the original wheels and the tyres put on. If that makes sense!

It would be ~£50 cheaper to replace just the three, but I am more comfortable with the 4 being replaced - if only the 5mm could be saved/sold somehow!

Any ideas?

Thanks again,

David

Many thanks for your replies,

I've come to the conclusion that it probably makes the most sense to get all 4 tyres done and request that I keep the 5mm. That way the 5mm can be left in my garage or in the car, should a puncture develop and be fitted. I know fitting and refitting can cause wear and tear, but how is that for a plan?

Thanks,

David

Many thanks for all your help.

Paradigm - I checked the cage and it looks like it will be an **** to remove - so I'm going to have to leave it on by the looks of it :(

I just got myself a rim with a bad tyre from eBay, which is going to be replaced with a cpc5 tyre along with 3 other wheels. I'm going to keep the 5mm tyre in my garage as a spare.

I phoned a couple of car dismantlers who didn't have the rims I needed, so I looked to eBay.

Thanks again,

David

Many thanks for your replies all,

bledd - did you purchase from Tyretraders? They can deliver a set of 4 for £164 for me, but I would have to get them fitted & balanced by someone.

kenai - it's mainly so I can just take the entire wheel off and put the entire wheel on, a bit lazy of me really. Plus I worry a little about the same tyre being fitted and removed too many times.

I'll keep it in my garage though, as it will just weigh down my car.

Although my space saver does look ropey, so I may have to just remove it completely and carry that as a spare.

Thanks,

David
