Hi, I've not bought any tyres before (first car) so wanted to check a couple of things.

Braking doesnt feel what it once was (dry) and I tend to get a bit more wheel spin in 1st at lower revs (dry). Had all new pads in october and 2 new discs so I put it down to tyres, Do tyres affect braking a lot?

Anyway, front has about 3mm and back around 5-6mm tread, What is stock depth?

I entered my reg into a few tyre websites and it says its 185/55/r15/82v.
Checked actual tyres on car and they're all 195/55/r15, I assume its the 195's that I need to order?

Having read a few tyre spec me threads here, I am looking at getting 2 of these:
CONTINENTAL 195/55R15 85V PREMIUM CONTACT 5
Fuel Efficency:C Wet Grip:A Noise dB:71 Noise Class:2

I notice it says 85V instead of 82V, Does this matter?

Sorry for all the nooby questions! :)

The 82 and 85 figures are the load rating for the tyre. The higher the number the greater the load rating. If 82 is correct for your car (which it may not be since it appears a previous owner has had the wrong size tyres fitted) then 85 will be perfectly fine to use.

Thanks for the replys, Is it likely the previous owner did fit the wrong size tyres?
All 4 are 195's, on the standard alloys. Should I get the 185's or stick with 195's as I only plan on replacing the front 2

Surely IF the manufacturers spec was 185 on those wheels, then 195 would be unwise as it would be pinching the tyre into a space narrower than it is itself?

But I don't know what the manufacturers spec is so meh

I wouldnt worry too much, for examle my handbook states I can ust 205 or 215.

I go with 205 because they are a LOT cheaper, and theres much more choice.
