I'm looking to get a new usb drive - my 64mb generic cheapo one has packed it (it was too small to be of any real use anyway :p)

Basically I like the idea of U3 but none of the U3 specific drives that are available at the moment seem to have had many good reviews. The SanDisk Titanium appears to be the best of the bunch but I've read several reports of the retractable port breaking quite easily.

I was going to for a 2gb OCZ rally drive if I can't find a decent U3 drive and I was wondering what is actually different about regular flash drives and the "U3" specific ones? Can you still set up u3 style software on a regular flash disk? I'm not too bothered about changing my desktop background or anything like that but the U3 dashboard with all your personal settings and stuff seems very useful...

Done a bit more research and it appears the only difference is the dashboard software - the hardware is identical. However you can't get the software unless you are a hardware producer. The relevance of the dashboard appears to be it does integration stuff like sets up your outlook accounts and makes sure all your stuff is removed when you pull the stick out.

I guess I'll just get a regular one and a few apps and wait until someone makes a knock off dashboard. Or i might even start making a dashboard myself... can't be that hard :p
