A mate of mine is selling me his U3011 for about 750 quid (he is moving overseas) - so that's a pretty good deal on its own.

Given that I am thinking of building my new rig around my display - I am just wondering whether I should go for U3011 or wait for the new Samsung SA 950 27" (this new display looks pretty damn sweet)

I mainly use my pc for gaming so the 1920 res would definitely keep my future upgrade cost down, compare to 2560 res where I probably have to spend 2x the money to upgrade my GPU every other year.

what would you guys think?

i run 2560X1500 quite happily on a single GTX 480.

admittedly it is overclocked quite high, but nothing unachievable.

the 30" is epic, and the 11 panel is superb. for 750 sheets, i would be snapping his arm off.

hmm.. I am really tempted by the idea of playing games on a 30"..

What sort of GPU would I need if I want to play most of the latest games at ultra settings (I play strategy/RPG games mainly - SC2, Civ 5 etc and WoW).

I supposed I would need to pair that CPU with i7 sandy bridge as well?

Just a thought. You might want to spend a few more pounds on RAM with tighter timings (but look out for 1.5V or less kits).

At this resolution you would be GPU limited anyway, if you have a decently clocked Quad Core now, I would rather invest the money in a high-end GPU or dual-gpu solution.

as i said in my post - my 480 at 850core does every game bar crysis with at least 4X AA and high settings.
i have considered sli 480s with the 2nd asus car being cheaper now but i cant justify it when everything i play is playable.

all a 30" means is that you will need to buy high end cards when new games start running badly.

a single flagship card is all that is required to run 2560X1600

more to the point, i would sooner have a card fulfilling its maximum potential rather than sat there twiddling its thumbs at 1080p or whatever

what is your current specs?

For £750 the U3011 is one heck of a deal.

Its an amazing quality monitor and for gaming it will look spectacular. Here is an in-depth review from TFTcentral, if you haven't seen it already.

As mentioned above - to drive the resolution you need a decent GPU, but these days even the £200 GTX 480 can play play modern games at this res and make them look good. If you are in the market for a high end monitor (that samsung 27in 3D display will cost at least £500) - then requiring a decent graphics card like this shouldn't be an issue.

Also, please bear in mind that the Samsung 27in may be 3D, but the panel technology they use is TN - in contrast the Dell U3011 uses a really nice quality IPS panel and displays almost double the number of pixels.

Finally, if you do buy it off your mate then make sure you ask him for the original box and a proof of purchase. Dell monitors are good quality, but certainly not immune to breaking - so make sure you can make use of the warranty (great service btw) if it is ever required.

I am going to build a new rig (I am using sony Vaio Z13 at the moment which plays most games okay at mid settings). I supposed I can stretch my budget a little and go for the GTX 5xx or HD 69xx - I am leaning towards GTX 570 at the moment.

cmndr has a good point there - looks like I am going to be getting the 3011 off him then!
