Thanks for putting me on to Ubiquiti AP's guys :) I'm definitely going down that route.

I currently use my Virgin router/wifi box as a modem only and do all my routing in the D-Link DIR-655 WIFI router I have attached to it. The features I use are basically DHCP (with some DHCP reservation), guest network, basic port based firewall, and port forwarding for some servers I run at home.

Originally I thought I would just build my own router using PFSENSE. However, I realise that I should not really tinker with a production network - if my network goes down my wife and kids make my life hell :)

So - TL;DR

For the functions I listed above should I use the Virgin Media supplied router (with wifi turned off) or should I invest in an ERL?

Cheers,
Dub

personally i just went with an ERL. Really powerful unit, very configurable if you like to learn new stuff (e.g. i just installed a script to block ad servers at the router.)

its not plug and play though, thats the only downside, there is a medium learning curve.

Best thing to do would be to stick with the virgin router, try it, if its still got issues, move to an edgerouter lite or edgerouter x

I have the ERL and it is amazing. Takes a bit of getting used to the command line (if you need something that the GUI can't yet do), but it is super powerful. I happen to love the command line syntax, so it has been a natural fit.

There's nothing wrong with building your own PFSense router, but the power consumption (and noise) won't be ideal.

I'm good with command line - have worked for network equipment manufacturers for most of my career :) I'll try the virgin router and then move to the ERL for extra toy factor soon :)
