so how is bluray for for linux now? what drives are reccomended? have a htpc setup, would like to add a bluray to it but what are peoples experiances with this? thanks.
The best I got was XBMC with a BluRay plugin (guide). It does rely on MakeMKV being installed to stream from a BluRay disc. I had the BluRay disc ripped and mounted as an .iso (I don't think that is a necessary step). I was able to select from BluRay titles in XBMC and select streams (different languages, directors commentary, etc.). The Java BluRay menus were not supported at all.
MakeMKV is a 30-day trial ware application which has a proprietary binary core and a OSS wrapper (it's cross-platform BTW). The licensed part of the software has to be a binary as it contains unique BluRay player keys (which would be blacklisted if they were publically readable). FYI it can be run in a Virtual Box install of Linux (hint, hint!!) It's easily the best tool (on Windows or Linux) for ripping individual titles off a BluRay disc or .iso image.
In summary Linux-based BluRay playback is still very clunky and a good few years a way from the ease of use of Cyberlinks PowerDVD.
I always thought that it wasn't an issue with linux but Sony being anal with the licencing meaning that blu-ray keys cannot be exchanged/handled on opensource software.
